I would never have messed with someone who lives an hour from my house.
As for the second - yes, I would try to find someplace else, or I would drop him off at 7pm on Thursday so you'll get your full money's worth and won't have to run around getting your pet to the boarder while trying to get out of town.

How much would the alternative charge total? That will likely make the decision for me.
Another option: can you take the pet with you and board him/her at your destination? DH and I did that the last time. This saved us a lot of $ (about $100 savings for a 3-day weekend), and we got to hang out with our dog during the drive, so that was a plus.
That's how our last few kennels have been too. Our latest only has morning and evening hours so if you happen to drop at 7am and pick up at 9am you aren't charged for a day but if you drop at 7am and pick up at 6pm it's a full day.
If you like this person, I wouldn't try to find someone else. I mean, if she did prorate, what would you save, $12? To me trying to find a new reputable, reliable person isn't worth it over a measly $12.
I think people are confused - you're not using the sitter that's an hour away, right? This is the one that's closer to home. I don't think the hour-away place even really has anything to do with this post.
Every place we've ever boarded our dogs has had a specific cut off time. If you don't pick the dog up by that time then you get charged for the extra day.
It's like a hotel. Checkout time is X. To stay later, you pay more. This is how every doggie daycare I have ever used charges for boarding.
Pretty much this. It probably depends on how long you left him last time vs this time. Sometimes you can check in early for your hotel if its available, but checking out late means u buy the room for the whole night. Does that make sense?
I agree with maybe dropping him off the night before if you are paying for it anyway, that way your not rushing to get him there in the morning and can spend that time getting ready for the trip.
I understand the frustration with the last minute change in policy (from your perspective). I'm going to guess she found people were taking advantage of the charging by the night and it was beginning to cause her problems (i.e. unable to take more dogs while others were waiting to be picked up and losing business because people leaving don't want to wait until 6 or 7 at night)
You trust her with your dog, consider it a tip and don't let it ruin the weekend. And if DH doesn't like the "extra" cost, he can figure out getting your dog to and from the coworker for the weekends. I'm willing to bet if it's his problem the $25 becomes worth the time savings.

By staying until 7 pm on Sunday rather than noon, your dog is taking a space the boarding facility could offer to another client who would pay full price for it. By asking for a prorated rent, you're taking money out of their pocket. $25 is cheap for pet sitting and I would happily pay that for a partial day if my dog is being watched by someone I trust.
We pay $25 per day for our petsitter and I pay her for a full day even when she is only there a partial day. In the end, it is worth an extra $12 for her to feel like we value her, appreciate her services and trust her with our pets. To me, it is really important that they be watched by someone I trust. Price is secondary.

I think some PP are confused. It's correct that most places have a cutoff time and if you are after that time, you have to pay for the whole night. Makes sense.
This place is different because she has to pick him up by whatever time she dropped him off. So, no cutoff time. If she left him at 10:00 in the morning, she'd have to be back to get him by 10:00 a.m. to avoid paying for another day...as opposed to a more reasonable 'cutoff' time of 4:00, or something.
That would annoy me too, OP. But, on the other hand, I'd be willing to pay the extra cost if I liked & trusted the place.

But it sounds like OP is saying there is no 'x' time at this place. The time that you have to pick up to avoid paying another full day is based on the time you dropped off, rather than a specific cutoff time.
