If you have had one, what was your experience like? Did it sit on your hair or was it just washed in and out like a regular conditioner?
I used a Groupon today for my hair. $30 for cut and deep conditioner. It did not mention a blow out so I assumed that would be extra. Usually for me that is $25 or so. When the stylist talked to me, she told me it would be another $40 to blow it out. Wow! That is A LOT. My hair is below shoulder length but thick, but I recently had a keratin treatment and I can blow it out at home relatively quickly. I was not happy about it, but I had DH watching the kids so I said fine just do it.
So the list price on their hair cuts start at $65 for cut and style. When I questioned why I had used a "deal" and still ended up spending as much as their regular cut and style, they told me that I had gotten the deep conditioner treatment which had a $30 value. I have had deep conditioners before and usually that entails leaving the product on for a length of time, but I noticed nothing different about what the stylist did. She did a wash, rine and condition.
Ugh. I got burned by Groupon the last time I did a salon deal for highlights only to be told once I was already in the chair that they were charging me $50 extra because my hair is thick. I have been using Groupon to try to find a closer salon -- even though I love my salon, it is an hour drive and trying to find time to get there is next to impossible. I "only" pay my stylist at a high end salon $75 for his cut and blow dry and he is widely regarded in my area, often featured in local media and was trained and worked forever at high end salons in NYC. Today's salon was ok, but the stylist came from another iffy salon and her consultation was just poor - I asked her what she recommended and she couldn't come up with much.
I *hate* when I get convinced I need a "conditioning treatment." Every time I go to get my color done I tell myself I'm going to stand strong and say no, but I ultimately cave.
That said - yes, it's usually a five minute wait time from when they put it on until when they wash it out. Definitely not part of the wash/condition/rinse process. Sorry you got screwed.
I avoid salon groupons because I've heard too many shafty upcharge stories like yours. It doesn't sound like you had a deep conditioning treatment, and I do think I would call the manager and ask him or her what that service usually entails. And there is no way I would have paid $40 for a blowout. Is their menu of services on their website? Is that the standard price?
Last time I had a deep conditioning treatment, I left the salon with it still in my hair. They told me to let it dry and just wash it out the next day. They took money off b/c they weren't styling it after the cut.
I feel like I could deep condition at home so I never pay for it in a salon. I also feel like this at my dentist with fluoride treatments. He charges 25 dollars and insurance does not over it so you have to pay out of pocket. I can use a fluoride rinse at home too but he asks every single time and sometimes tries to give it to me without asking.

I would complain to the salon manager and groupon about this "deal". I cannot imagine groupon wants to get a reputation of selling scams and leaving the buyer screwed.

DD gets a deep conditioning treatment every other month or so. It's only $15. It makes a huge difference in her hair. I've always wanted to do them at home, but I can never find a product that works so well. They put it in and she sits under the hair dryer for about 15 minutes with really low heat because of her age.
I've had a deep conditioning treatment once or twice ... they put me under a dryer (with the conditioner on, covered with a shower cap type plastic) for 10-15 minutes, then rinsed out and styled.
