Even though I have been to England several times for extended periods, I still don't get the upper classes, particularly in London--the differences between Chelsea, the "Sloane Rangers," etc. Can someone point me toward a good non-fiction book that explains the upper part of British society? Thanks!
Not non-fiction, but Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park, Downton Abbey) wrote a contemporary set novel about the British upper classes - Snobs. I really enjoyed it, and it did give a lot of insight.
to the Julian Fellowes rec. I love him! In addition to Snobs, he wrote a novel called Past Imperfect which is about the same subject. I also just read a great new book called Capital by John Lanchester which touches on your material somewhat. Other good ones include Alys, Always by Harriet Lane and The Marrying Game by Kate Saunders.
Eta: Cooler, Faster, More Expensive by Peter York looks like the book you want.
