While I watch this show and love it or list it, I always feel like I am being duped. Come on, you can't gut a house for $60K in renovation costs! I want them to put a disclaimer that says "we ate X amount of costs and in the real world this reno would have cost twice this amount."
Aren't most of those shows filmed in Canada? I just figured that accounted for the prices. Also, I know my uncle paid easily $800,000+ for a 3 bedroom ranch in LA and then dropped another $50,000 just to make it livable. I'd love to see them do a show in Nebraska or someplace like that!
ah, you see, because they put up "$70k", get like $150k worth of actual renovations (my guess is they aren't charged for most/all of the labor/design/permitting, because, GTFO with what happens vs. what they "pay" for it).
how they get the money is a mystery to me. i have no idea how you get a loan for the potential value of your house when you don't yet have any equity beyond the down payment. but i'm not in finance.
the house values are mostly insane, so far as i can tell, because most of the episodes are filmed in cananda and their real estate market is INSANE.
I don't understand why the real estate brother is part of the show at all.
because he's the cuter one.
also, i do watch love it or list it, which suffers from the same BULLSHIT "renovation cost" problem. with the added annoyance of that balding guy whose voice could cut glass it's so annoying. i'm a sucker for ANY show where a shithole is made habitable.
Love it or List it annoys me bc I feel like they always want Hillary to do things that aren't feasible for 50k - add an extra bedroom, etc and then get pissy when she can't do it. You can only do so much with a limited space unless you have an unlimited budget.
I watched a few episodes yesterday morning, and the ones I saw the reno was included in the cost of the mortgage. So if the couple wanted to buy a $250K house, they'd show ones that are $195K, and then do the reno and the total cost would be $195K + $50K reno, so less than the couple was hoping to spend.
I saw one where the couple did like, $20K worth of reno on a house they were selling, and then added $10K to their max budget on the buying end, because the RE Agent Brother told them that's what they'd get over what they had initially asked for the house they were selling.

YES this, plus they're always like "well, we can afford a new house like $200k more than this one is worth, but we can only do $50k in renos to love it. Including this super expensive hidden problem we 'don't know' about". And I understand that's mortgage vs cash, but it makes it a really unfair competition. Who wants to see annoying voice man win every time?
I love that you guys think David is annoying. I thought most people found Hillary annoying. She's a freaking designer! I hate how her problems are things like, "Oh, they won't let us have a permit for this," or, "Oh, these floor joists actually aren't the right kind to finish off your third floor." Shouldn't you know this before you start demo-ing/building?! But I still want her to win. Her renovations are just more exciting than just finding a new house to buy.
The "point" of the show is weird though, because who really cares if the homeowners stay or go? Hillary or David are just all, "Yay, I won!" or "Oh, well, better luck next time." It's not really tangible and I'd be surprised if they decide to list it if they even go with the property David showed them.
Do not get MrP started on the structural stuff on both shows. Actually as I'm posting this, he asked what I was posting and I said HGTV and he goes into a profanity laced rant about those hacks.
His wife was all put your fucking goggles on and he was all i do want i want whore. Then bam! Splinter in the eye. He was making stairs into his basement and couldnt measure. He cut the wall wrong, the stairs wrong, the banister wrong.
See but this is why I can't watch the real stuff. I get anxious just reading that!!

Property brothers = nice eye candy at least. Want to smack most of the homeowners. Love it or list it = MOST ANNOYING SHOW EVER. I want to run those home owners off a cliff. Renovation adict is a close second for annoying.

What? You mean he thinks that an expereinced contractor should be able to walk through a house and figure out that the central wall running perpendicular to the joists might actually be structural?
However would they know that!?!
And electrical lines might run through a wall with outlets in it??
Plumbing stacks might come through a wall that runs adjacent to both a bathroom and a kitchen?
Come on now. They don't have a crystal ball!!
And Amen to the cost bullshit on all of these shows. We're rounding the bend on a reno that's about the same scale as the love it/list it or property brother's type stuff. We paid people to do parts of it (architectural plans. roof. HVAC. plumbing rough-in. Most of the drywall. Refinished hardwoods)...but the vast majority (including demo, electrical, framing, tile, finish plumbing, finish carpentry) we did ourselves or with the help of wonderful friends. If ALL of that had been something we paid somebody to do...I think it'd come in north of $200k.
I don't know if I beleive they really pay for all of the renovations on these shows. I am guessing most of the contractors donate their labor or supplies. The show I don't get is "bang for your buck," where people drop like 100K on a backyard or finished basement and never get nearly the amount they put in.

I watch these shows and get annoyed (for the reasons others have stated), but I just can't turn them off.
On Property Brothers do they actually ever finish a whole house? It seems like they do a great reno on the kitchen and first floor, and maybe a bathroom, but never show anything else. I always feel like the other rooms are still gross and they leave them for the buyer to complete.
Love It or List It must search for homes with major issues. Every house has something major that they magically didn't know about. Seriously? Every one?

That's actually exactly what they do.
What's wrong with that though? I mean...you buy a house that has a totally bizarre layout and painfully dated kitchen. Chances are the bedrooms upstairs are relatively normal. They're just bedrooms, right? They probably need paint. maybe new carpet and light fixtures. That's not really a big deal though. Revamping the layout and doing a whole new kitchen downstairs though - that is well outside the DIY realm for most homeowners.

How does MrP feel about Income Property?!
That guy seems to know what he's doing. But he's always working in basements so there isn't too much to worry about.
I've never seen him get all omgwtfbbq upon finding ducting or point loads.

Holy shit this soffit has STUFF in it?!? Well that wasn't foreseeable at all. Budget blown!
I agree that Income Properties only seems to get surprised by things that you actually can't forsee/figure out until demo is underway. (eg. that the plumbing in the walls is all wrong and needs to be redone. That some genius decided to hack giant holes in structural members. etc.)

Yes on Love it or List it. Oh, we had no idea you had electric heat. And, did you see the episode of the Brothers show yesterday with the tall guy needing to resize the doors and closets and wife was about to pop out twins. Doofus.
