When is the best time, generally, to go to Vermont for fall foliage? H and I were thinking of October 11-13 next year. Of course, it totally depends on the weather so I'm trying to plan based on estimates.
We plan to rent a small cabin as well. How far in advance should I reserve it?
If you have anything else you'd care to share, that would be awesome.
If you go to Southern VT that weekend should be fine.
Peak foliage in VT is typically the last week in September and the first week in October.
Is the weekend you're going Columbus Day weekend? I know this books early. Not exactly sure when you should book this by. I know my husband booked a weekend in Queechee, VT last year for my 30th and I'm pretty sure he booked at the beginning of the summer.
We stayed in a hotel, but I did want to say that Quechee/Woodstock, VT is a really cute area. If you go there I recommend checking out the glass at Simon Pearce and having lunch or dinner there. You may want a place a bit more remote though.
We did a hot air balloon ride and I can ask H for the info if you're interested.
We went to Vermont for our honeymoon- mid October(~12-20th). It was gorgeous! We stayed at a small INN down in southern VT, near the Green Mountains area. We drove all around southern Vermont looking at covered bridges, did some hiking, ate really good cheese, shopping, etc. Then we drove up to Montreal for a hockey game (DH's idea) and came back down to stay at a hotel in Burlington for the last few days. We went to Stowe, toured Ben & Jerry's, Vermont Teddy Bear, a winery, and I can't remember what else.
We LOVED Vermont, and plan to return for our 5th anniversary.
I don't remember for sure, (it was 3 yrs ago) but probably only about 1-2 months ahead. I had been looking at a lot of places and couldn't make up my mind. FWIW- the Inn had a LOT of empty rooms when we were there. We stayed down in Peru area- just east of Manchester. There were a lot of B&B's and quaint Inns down there.
I live in VT (I used to live in Quechee, now I live down the road in Woodstock, both mentioned by another poster). This year Columbus day weekend was peak for us, and it was a beautiful fall! It is always different each year due to weather, but I would say the first or second weekend in October is generally best. Woodstock is a quintessential VT town, and I do recommend Simon Pearce in Quechee for lunch or dinner (google it). Not sure about renting a "cabin" although renting a condo will be a lot easier. If you rent in Quechee there will be a lot more options for condos. I would book no later than March for Columbus day, and that is pushing it.
