We have a Honda Fit. When the babies were infants, we almost never put them in there b/c it was hard to have two RFing seats. Now that they are older, we have two FFing Cosco Sceneras, and it's great (although I don't love those carseats and will eventually get Britax Marthons for there, which is what we have in our van). We primarily use it for short errands around town and for commuting. We drive our Odyssey most other places just b/c our double strollers are so big and bulky.
I'm not sure what we'll do next year when #3 arrives. I've done a tiny bit of preliminary research on carseats.org and haven't found much on how 3 carseats will fit. However, IIRC, Anka from the old Nest fit 3 carseats in her fit. If someone if FB friends with her, maybe they can ask her for some pointers.
I *think* Anka ended up with a mini van. You have to carefully choose your car seat if you want to fit 3 across in anything, and it will probably require seat belt installation and works better if 2 are forward facing, from what I've read.

she did. I remember her h tried to fit three in the back and he couldn't.

I think we will get one when our civic dies. But we are two and done, and they will both be forward facing and in boosters by then, so it will be fine. I wouldn't try to fit three, that is for sure. Anna had 2 or 3 radians and still couldn't make them fit, iirc.
I have a Honda Fit and have had lots of various 3 car seat configurations. I have 2 kids myself, but used to watch a family of 3 plus my own daughter before I had my second. It can be done!!!
Here are some of the configurations that have worked in my car: (Driver's side, Center, Passenger's side) Graco High Back Booster, Britax Rear Facing Boulevard, Chicco Rear Racing Keyfit
Graco High Back Booster, Chicco Rearfacing Keyfit, Graco no back booster
Britax forward facing Marathon, Walmart Boosterseat (can't remember the name but it was the most narrow one), Rearfacing Keyfit
I'm sure there have been other ways I have put them in there, but those are the ones I can remember off hand.
I should mention that I have a 2009 Fit.
The fuel efficiency is great! We usually get between 35 and 45 Mpg depending on how much of the driving is city vs highway. Although we didn't plan it when we bought this car, we are now a one car family and I am contstantly surprised at how versatile the Fit is. Only once have we wanted to carry something (a backyard climber set) that we couldn't do with our car.
Also - two other things I thought of. We have our carseats checked anytime we get a new one by the State Police, and they have always told us the best way to install, and best configuration for the seats so we have followed that.
And the other thing is that I try to keep my hatchback (trunk) area, as empty as possible so I can store more things in there. One great thing about the car is that you can put things under the backseats, so since I always have kids in carseats who do not need the floor that's where I stick the stroller, diaper bags, potty for the car, etc. The only time we put the stroller in the hatchback area is when we take our double BOB out.
We have a Nissan Versa hatchback. We went on Edmunds and compared the interior measurements of the Versa and Fit in our model year ('09), and the Versa gave a couple extra inches in various places.
We only have one carseat, but I think others have fit 3 across with the right combo. It would be a tight squeeze, but I think you could do it.
We've been very happy with the Versa. It hasn't given us any problems.

We have had our carseats in a fit before. We have 2 ff sunshine radians xls (whichever is the one that has side impact protection) and a rf combi recarro. That's the normal configuration we have in our CRV as well and everyone fits pretty comfortably.

Oh, this is reassuring. We need new carseats anyway for our Fit b/c our I hate our Cosco Sceneras, so I think when the new baby gets here, we'll get Radians.
