Everything from Barney's drunken pass at Robin after the strip club, his declaration that he was done chasing her, and his supposed relationship with Patrice was a "play" to get Robin to recognize her feelings for him. Barney and Patrice were colluding. Barney told Ted that he was going to propose to Patrice, and knew if he told Robin so that she could bust up the proposal that meant that Ted was officially over Robin and just wanted her and Barney to be happy. And then Barney proposed to Robin and she said yes.
I agree, I hate Robin, and Barney deserves better. But, oh well.
Ted is a pretty crappy friend to Barney, I think. In his mind Barney really did love Patrice, and yet he sent an ex to bust up his proposal even after promising he wouldn't tell anybody? Not cool.

That was just Ted being Ted. And Barney recognized that's what he would do. You can't fault someone for being himself.

I don't think it was so much that Ted is a shitty friend to Barney, but that his loyalties ultimately lie with Robin.
And if nothing else, it was so that the audience could see Ted finally getting closure on Robin (which I thought they had achieved in the "No Pressure" episode a while back when he walked out of his building and they showed all the yellow umbrellas ... but hey, what do I know).
While it came across as sweet and well done in the show, I still think the whole thing was pretty stupid. Like Robyn said, she's supposed to be flattered that he lied to her and manipulated her? And then agree to marry him? I would be SOOOO pissed if someone did that. He had her thinking he was dating and in love with someone he knows she hates. The emotional turmoil that would cause is just unnecessarily cruel.
It was one of the better episodes. I actually really liked Ted's storyline, it was funny and totally in character. But what they've done to Robyn is so sad. She was actually a likeable, strong female character and they reduced her to a shrill, pathetic mess.
I seriously just want this show to get on with Ted's story, meet the mother and say goodbye.

Agreed. But we're supposed to buy it because Robin is now a hot mess.
I liked her a lot better in the first couple seasons, when she was independent and strong and didn't take shit from anyone.

Well, yeah, I can!
Honestly, I think the whole thing was very demeaning to Patrice. Basically, nobody thought she had enough redeeming features to make her attractive to Barney. Robin was a flat-out bully to her. And Ted was willing to bust up her proposal to give Robin another chance at Barney, even though Robin had chances galore and Barney made it pretty clear that he would rather be with Patrice.
As a plot device, it was clever. As a way to act when someone is supposed to be your friend, it was crappy.

I'm sure they made Patrice over-the-top annoying (and I didn't actually think she was THAT bad ... more like "constantly cheerful" rather than flat-out annoying) so that they'd have a "genuine" reason for the other characters to be in shock that Barney would be interested in her. Rather than having them say, "Come on, Barney, we know you'd never date a fat girl. What's your real motive here?"
I was hoping they'd send her off with some dignity by having Future Ted say that she eventually rose to an important position at World Wide News, like the CEO or their most successful lead anchor. Or that she became really rich or something. If they let her fade back into oblivion without wrapping up her storyline with something nice, I'll be pissed that they treated her so badly just as a plot device to trick Robin into getting back with Barney.
I wonder if she'll be a bridesmaid at their wedding.

I guess you wouldn't be Ted's friend IRL.
OMG, I would constantly be smacking Ted. And Robin.

Even though we know they end up together, when she said "I'm supposed to want to date you after you manipulated me...."etc, etc, I was really excited! Then, she went from that to saying yes to a marriage proposal. ARgh!!

Ugh, rewatched it last night (since my H didn't see it the first time) and I still *hated* the way they did that. It was really terrible.
You know, in my brain I know that it was a shitty move of Barney to run a "play" on Robin. If someone here posted about her engagement happening this way I think we'd all tell her to run for the hills.
But I still thought the whole thing was really sweet. I don't think Barney really tricked or manipulated Robin into anything ... I think he knows how her mind works and that she stubbornly talks herself out of a lot of things. She had the chance in the limo to forget about him and move on, but she chose to go up to the roof and try to get him back. And it's been hinted that their wedding day doesn't go smoothly, so who knows what'll happen for them in the future.
Plus, Neil Patrick Harris is really charming and he's been giving the awful Barney character a heart. I don't think they would've even gone in this direction if they hadn't cast someone so good ... he probably would've been a Quagmire-style horndog for the duration of the series, or they would've written him off a long time ago for being so despicable.
And the show's been so crappy lately that I'm just in an "I'll take it" mode whenever something halfway decent happens. This wasn't nearly as terrible as the episode where the all-female jury based their decision entirely on how attractive the defense attorney was *gag*

I'll also add that I think NPH is amazing as Barney. It has been the highlight of the show, IMO, to see his character more fleshed out. I loved the back story with him working at a coffee shop and being a hippie before he "suited up". And it was interesting to watch him date both Nora and Quinn this season (and last season?).
