A few weeks ago I went out and bought gifts for all the teachers and support staff at Baby Fuss's school. I got everyone small boxes of very nice, locally made chocolates, about $10 each.
Last Friday I found out that the director is on like a liquid weight loss diet the past few weeks (she was whining good-naturedly about the doughnuts I brought to the holiday party). I have not had time since to think of an alternative or go out and get it (hence why I plan and execute these things weeks in advance).
Am I a bad person if I give her the box of chocolates anyway? She has kids who could eat them at least.
Or should I run out all frazzled-like at the last minute and buy her a $10 Starbucks giftcard, and give six people chocolates and her the gift card? I hate having to run extra errands like that during the work week, and avoid it at all possible costs.
Both options seem a little weird to me. What sayeth TIP?
Yeah give her the chocolates. She can regift or give them to her kids. Plus if you hand these all out at once, it might be weird to give her something different.
If she's on Medifast, she can have a regular cup of coffee. But, I'm not one to tailor group gifts to individual desires. Stick with the chocolates - it's the thought that counts.
Stick with what you have. (plus Starbucks drinks have as many calories as chocolates do)
Not if you're not drinking one of those crazy ass dessert drinks!
Okay, I know I'll be the lone dissenter here. But as someone who isn't crazy about chocolate anyhow... I'd go out and get her something else. It would be SUPER thoughtful and I'm sure she'd be really touched that you thought about her current circumstances.
Unless you customize all of the gifts, I think it would be odd to give one person something different. You also don't know if the other teachers you plan to give chocolate to have allergies or medical conditions that keep them from eating the candy. I say give the same thing to everyone.
Plus, why add the stress of running more errands this close to Christmas?
I'm sure she will find someone to give them to if she isn't able to eat them in the near future.
I agree that it's extra thoughtful, so I'd try to swing getting her the Starbucks card. Since she's the director, I think you can get around the" everyone gets the same thing issue." I gladly volunteer to take the chocolates off your hands if it makes it easier.

Yeah, Aimee, that's a bit of my hangup here. She's good at what she does, but IME personality-wise she can tend toward the petulant side. Doesn't seem very easy to please either way.
I try to put myself in her shoes and think, Would she go that extra mile for my or another's kid? Maybe. Would she go that extra mile for ME? Nah.
Because I can't lie, unless there is a medical reason, I'm assuming anyone on a liquid diet is a fad dieter anyway and will be trying Adkins, then south beach, then the grapefruit diet with plenty of chocolate fueled binges in between.

Well there's a medical reason like she's obese, not a medical reason like her jaw is wired shut.
And I've been on a diet before during the holidays, and while its not easy, it's hardly an occasion for abject bitterness just because other people who aren't fat get to eat chocolate. No different from being fat any other time of the year.
