This is my first year as the manager of my department so I received a few gifts (both really nice boxes of chocolate). One is from one of our investment managers. I dont even speak to them regularly. The other is from our attorneys who I do speak with regularly.
What do you do? Thank you cards? Verbal thanks? Nothing?
I know my company gives a gift to the attorneys. I am sure they dont give to the other.
We send stuff to business associates every year. We rarely receive anything except maybe an e-mail saying thanks or if they see someone from my company they'll mention that they received their gift and they appreciate it. Thank you cards seem like over kill in this situation.
If I got a gift from someone I wanted to impress (like a client), I'd probably send a thank you email.
The gifts that I get tend to be from vendors who want my business, so I don't see a need to send a thank you. When we get gifts from clients they tend to be sent to the partner to distribute to the team, so the partner takes care of the thank you.

+1
We get gifts from vendors very frequently this time of year, but not very often from clients.
I get gifts from vendors and companies (mostly law firms) who want business. For the more personal ones I do a thank you. For example, I received a running jacket one year (lawyer knew I like to run) and a spa gift certificate another year. For the generic gift baskets I usually don't do anything in return. Those gifts I usually leave out for the entire office staff to enjoy.
