I live in an apt. building. There are probably about 100 apartments total. We received a flyer under our door that says something along the lines of "let's show how much we appreciate our staff here at XXXX." Then goes onto asking for cash donations to be put under her door and she will divide it and give it to the staff or buy gift cards (5 concierge and 2 managers) equally.
This is weird right?!? She did sign her name and write her apartment number, so it's not anonymous, but seriously?? We are all supposed to trust someone we never met to handle our cash gift. She didn't specify an amount, but I would never do this. I will bake cookies or something, but I'm not putting cash under someone's door.
I'd like to believe that she has the best of intentions, but that she's just clueless about how to handle a matter like this.
No way in hell I'd just slip money under her door. Or even give her the money in person, unless she was someone official (landlord, super, whatever) and/or a very trustworthy friend.
If she asks, tell her that you'll be thanking them on your own.
Maybe I am just selfish, but I guess I don't feel like I should do something for them. I only see one or two due to my schedule. I don't get presents for doing my job at work so it never occurred to me to give them something. I guess I never thought about it.

It is very common in many cities for residents of buildings to tip the doorman, front desk staff/concierge, maintainience guys, etc.

I felt this way at our old apartment. We barely saw them and the couple of times we did need them to do stuff for us, it was such shoddy work. But it's still expected and we wanted to be on good terms for our move so we still gave a holiday tip.
It is expected to give a holiday tip for these types of jobs.

Then don't. It's your money to spend how you see fit. When I rented, I never gave tips or holiday gifts to our building mgmt.

Good to know. I've never had any of these things until I moved to DC. There are just so many people that I wouldn't know what to do. I can't afford a cash gift for everyone.
