You put in good effort but I think next year you should just do a tasty cookie and focus less on the fanciness. Or switch to something with a lot less pain to color like a snowflake.
I would have ditched the entire effort after 2 days bed rest so good for you for keeping at it.
I would have more strenuously objected had I realized it was 7 dozen--so I am impressed you had the fortitude to even try that.
But this post is pretty much everything I thought it would be. I love that OP posted and has a sense of humor about this.
Oh I didn't make 7 dozen elves. That was the original plan but I only made 9 elves - one for each person and two for the judges. I still had to make 11 other cookies per person though. Those were just circles with frosting on them.
Another day in GBCN infamy--can you see the 'do you remember the Hitler elves post' now? Seriously, good effort though, hope all the cookies are yummy!
I made some decorated sugar cookies... and, have found it much easier to use glaze, rather than royal icing, to do the flooding/fill in. You can't write on it like the royal icing. For the outline and some of the details, I've used candy melts melted in a ziploc bag with the corner cut off.
Example - these Elmo cookies. Red glaze, and everything else (except the pupils of the eyes - those are round candies) is candy melts. It was a LOT easier than other failures I've had with royal icing! Something to remember for next year!
