I have an assistant but we are also part of a team of 11 people. Everyone on the team buys everyone else birthday cards and we do a yankee swap at the holidays, so that is that.
Do you get a gift from them for christmas, your birthday, and boss day? If you have, what has been a gift you have liked?
weird exception: mine does and I hate. Hate it more because she gets me gift cards- more awkward. But it's apparently custom with her and partner. I tried asking for work things - mechanical pencils stopped be carried by my firm for instance. Nope. Still gift card.
My husband gets golf stuff, books, fruit basket, bottle of whiskey, sports gifts, cookies... It is a small office and his office staff does not need to kiss up. They know how valuable they are and are treated as such. I think acknowledging a good boss is a nice gesture.
I am a legal assistant for two attorneys who I have worked with for years, and I always get them a little something for their birthdays and a Christmas gift. I assure you I am no ass kisser. Maybe it's a Southern thing, but it's fun to give a gift that they will like and use. I got my associate a new rolling cart so he could stop borrowing a rickety old one from another attorney, and my partner is getting a set of whiskey stones and a nice bottle of bourbon. I guess I just like to give gifts, and they always give me very nice gifts so I like to reciprocate.
