We discussed it and picked out a ring together so I knew he was going to propose sometime. The actual proposal was out of the blue though. I didn't suspect a thing.

He kept asking me to help him unpack a box (we were moving). Finally I told him, dammit, I'm tired, I'm not unpacking that box right now and I swear to god if you hid an engagement ring in that box I will KILL YOU NOW LET ME SIT ON THE COUCH.
Yes, We had picked out/bought the ring together in February. I knew he had it, and I thought he would propose on the beach in Florida in July. He waited until we went back to our college town in October, but I had an idea it was coming that weekend. I even told a friend before going to get a manicure "If I am getting my nails done, he'd BETTER propose this weekend!" and he did.

We'd discussed it and looked at rings, but I had no idea he was going to propose out of the blue while we were eating dinner on the back porch one night.
It wasn't a surprise. I didn't what he had planned but I knew it would be around Christmas. Then we had two deaths in our families (back to back), so it turned into something that I completely knew about. Today happens to be the day that he proposed (ten years ago).
It would have been a surprise had I not accidentally seen an avail that he had sent to his friends a few weeks before. He had asked me to check his email for something (I can't even remember what it was now). He must have forgotten that they had been emailing back and forth about it. I felt so bad. I closed it right away and tried to forget I ever saw it. He still doesn't know and I will never tell him.
Ex had let it slip that he was getting a ring designed for me. So when a surprise date night ended up in a flight to a nearby city, I kinda figured that was what was coming. He did ok with the overall theme of things, but the actual proposal was quite disappointing. I wish I hadn't have known ahead of time that he was going to do it.

We had gone ring shopping together, and had my rings ordered (they were designed to look like my grandmothers, and we both had some family diamonds to put on it). I knew it was coming, but thought it might be a little later. . . until we were at our boss's house, and he had us come look at something on his computer in his office. In the printer tray was a printed email that started out "We're so excited for Mr. EloiseWeenieSkipperdee and Eloise. Join us Saturday. . . " and I stopped reading so I wouldn't know anything more. I never said a word about it to anyone, and never will. My H is still so proud of this. He proposed, then "surprised" me with an engagement party (which was the email invite that I saw).
The plus side, is I made sure I had on a really cute dress (although the strap broke right before he proposed, LOL).

Yes, my mom had to tell me he phoned, because he transposed two numbers in his phone number. She needed to know his correct number to phone him back. I knew then that he was asking my folks for my hand (awww).
Him actually wanting to marry me - no. We talked about and even planned a few aspects of our wedding before getting engaged. I knew we would get engaged at some point in the near future, but was thinking like 6 months from then or something. He proposed way earlier than I thought he would.
Yes, I knew. We had already planned half the wedding before the ring was ready. Also, he is terrible at keeping secrets; I was fairly certain the night he would propose too.
I knew it was coming because I accidently found the ring. I didn't say anything to him that I had found it. It was MONTHS later when he finally proposed.

We had gone ring shopping, so I knew it was coming at some point. When he called the day of to meet him at a designated location after work, I knew he was going to propose then.

My parents actually told me an ruined the surprise... to this day, DH doesnt know that.....he would be crushed. My parents had come for Thanksgiving and my mom was hospitalized for several days so she and my dad were still staying at my apartment while I was on a business trip until my mom was well enough to make the trip back to their house. I came home from the airport and my mom said "Lee is going to ask you to marry him tonight, so you better look nice".... so much for surprise!
