I don't believe one bit your 18 yo brother was drinking juicy juices in a barn with 200 other people his age. So yeah, it's good he didn't get arrested for underage drinking. And now you say he probably smoked pot. I think the police making sure no one was behind the wheel intoxicated is not the worst thing that could have happened that night...

So by that logic the police should lock the doors of a bar to ensure no one drives drunk?
It's really not about my poor ol baby brother. He'll survive and I'm not upset. I'm just really shocked at these responses.
Eta: Oh and I think my "are you fucking kidding me" response was completely justified towards Cahab's weird ass post.
I didn't say anything that many others haven't also been saying.
I just can't get up in arms about a situation in which no real harm was done. No one was hurt, perhaps lives were saved, and no one was arrested. I just don't understand the outrage.
People at a bar are drinking legally. Not at this barn. I also live in a rural community and drunk driving causes deaths on the roads every weekend. The casualities are usually among people under 25 yo. As a parent, I'd be glad if the police tried to prevent my underage kid from all kinds of trouble.

This still doesn't make sense to me. Why should cops only prevent minors from drunk driving? And I'm sure there were 21 y/os at the party too.
I'm enjoying discussing this. I've been stuck at my parent's house today.
I think it isn't so much "let's get the kids!" as it is in a barn situation there likely won't be anyone around to be responsible. And I've been to many a bar where police hung out in the parking lot to make small talk with leaving patrons. Not harassing, but making sure there is a DD.
letsgetweird, i think you need to take a breath. nobody is accusing your brother of anything and your slide from "do you think this is reasonable" to "are you fucking kidding me?!??!" and "abuse of power" was whoa.
if you've already decided the police were out of line what the fuck did you post for?
I'm relaxed. I'm not even upset about this whole thing lol.
I just think the responses are odd in this post. And ya, people are accusing him of things. I'm not insulted by that. He probably was drinking or smoking weed.

Okay. I actually have an 18 yo son. Several weeks ago, about 40 of his friends were at a "gathering" at one of his friends' houses. I am 99.9% sure drinking and pot smoking was going on there.
All of our local cops showed up, blocked the driveway, and started zip tying kids and some kids headed out through the woods. I think 3 actually made the 2 mile trek out, lol.
The mom (who was there) was arrested because she was screaming at the cops and being the hot mess that she was. Her 18 yo ended up tazed because he went after the cop that was cuffing his mom. It was a major white trash event that was relayed to me first had by DS1's friend who dropped to his knees as soon as he saw headlights and said: I have to report back to basic (Marines) tomorrow!
All the police did is make the kids stay there for a few hours and make sure nobody had any outstanding warrants. If the kids were deemed safe to drive, they were allowed home.
I would be so much happier to have my kid held for a couple of hours than to be on the road drunk. OR in jail for MIP.
My kid, however was at the Notre Dame game in Wisconsin w/DS2 and his bio dad. Thank The Lord.
My long winded point: all those kids got a free pass, including your brother. Be happy!
If he or anyone under 21 at this party got pulled over or caused an accident because he/they was/were intoxicated, the fact that they are under 21 yo would make it worse. An underage DUI charge is worse than a regular DUI.
You say your brother was probably drinking underage and smoking pot with 200 "friends" in a barn and the cops are wrong to keep them from getting on the road and not only risking their own lives but also the lives of innocent bystanders.... I am not understanding this thread.
You are being asinine. 200 people do not gather in a barn with no alcohol. And it sounds like there were under age people there. There is absolutely no reason to be angry at the cops and every reason for your brother to be grateful that he was only held there for a couple hours. This is a rational response from the cops to keep drunk people off the road and not have to deal with arresting a jillion underage drinkers.
Honestly, letsgetweird-YOU ARE RIGHT! this was NOT LEGAL. Call the Feds, The ACLU, and the UNHCR! omg, you asked a question and people gave their opinions on the matter based on your scant details on the occurrence. Stop being so combative. If you and your family really do feel some great injustice was done, seek professional legal advice.
