It's likely that they were questioning people. If someone was a victim of a crime at that party it would be prudent for the police to question everyone.

That's what I was thinking, too. And consider the source: how reliable is your brother? Was he drunk at the time? Where was the party that it could accommodate 200 people? Is it possible that what happened isnt exactly how your brother remembers/described it?
I can't imagine the police trying to interview 200 people at a party unless something really serious happened. Especially in a town with less than 3,000 people, I doubt they have the manpower for that.
My experience goes the opposite way. I live in a small town (9K so bigger than that, but still small) and I've lived in major cities. The police in small towns are much more likely to get bogged down on little things. NYPD isn't interviewing 200 people over a noise complaint. In this town? sure. (For example, there was a break in at the guitar store "downtown" a few months ago. The police heard glass breaking and then stopped the only car they'd seen come into town (by the only road into town) before they left. You can't get that sort of response without small town busybody police work.)
You could do a terry stop style interview of 200 people in two hours with only a few cops.
Our small town police used to do similar things (blocking only exit to property, etc) although we were all underaged so they kind of could. He's 18? Well of course the cops were fucking with a bunch of drunk minors on a Friday night in a small town with nothing else going on.
As for the 200 people part, I believe it. We would pick a field, tell our friends who would tell their friends who were usually in a neighboring small town who would tell their friends until it reached an obscene amount of people.
I'm so confused! Were they on a piece of land that had a gate akin to a cattle gate?
Were they in a house that had a front gate around the yard?
I want to know where 200 people gather and there is only 1 gate and 1 way out.
Well I wasn't there so I don't know for sure. But I would assume it was similar to a "cattle gate."
It's not at all rare to have a few acres or so with one exit. It doesn't take a big space to fit 200 people ya know...
Well outside in a field with something like a cattle gate makes way more sense then a house with 200 people. I was thinking you were talking about a house at first.

I wasn't trying to be snarky at all.
They were hanging out in a barn lol! We aren't rednecks I promise. I'm not used to these country small towns although it's only about 30 minutes from where I grew up but it sounds like this is normal behavior for small town cops.
I live in a tiny tiny town, people do weird crap out here. Barn parties with DJ's are the highlight of these people lives. I understand. lol

Look, a complaint isn't likely to do much. There was no police brutality and while yes, it was a dire code violation, it isn't like the cops locked them in and left. They were there the whole time. I imagine that was their way to let everyone sober up. Your brother should be reminded he could have been arrested for possession of alcohol even just being present.
This knee-jerk response in today's society of complaint filing and yelling that someone broke the rules while ignoring the rules already being broken sucks ass.

If there was a drop of alcohol at that party, he could be arrested for possession. Maybe not charged depending on the situation, but it could have been much worse.
You and your brother should be thankful that quite a few drunk people weren't out driving instead of looking to complain that they had to continue to hang out where that had already been hanging out for a while.
Small town cops can be much larger assholes than it sounds like they were. No one was yelled at, or abused.

The cops here do this all the time. It's a small town and minors usually party in the dessert or on one of the big properties. Instead of busting the party which leaves a bunch of kids with citations and causes a bunch more to take off running into the dessert in the middle of the night. They just show up and block the exit for a couple hours. Everyone stops drinking when the cops get there and by the time they let people leave they are ok to drive. Sometimes they do a sobriety check on the driver of every car. Honestly as a teenager I was fine with it and as a parent I'm definetly in support of it. They are keeping them driving drunk.

I understand what you are saying, If I was sober I would be very upset. Also if my little brother was sober and was kept in the drunk corral for no reason. Id totally encourage him to file a report. Its his right to do that. I guess I just see this as small town cops trying to keep teenagers safe. I admit its a patronizing and overreaching way of doing it.
On the flip side, if one of these people drove drunk and got into an accident, everyone would be questioning where were the cops to prevent this? That happens a lot in the rural area I live in. They try to keep up, but it still happens and people complain anyway.

Listen I'm all for people not drinking and driving. But how would you feel if you were at a bar and the cops wouldn't let you leave so everyone could sober up?
If I were 18 I'd be pretty fucking thankful I wasn't going to jail.
No. If you're breaking the law you should be thankful you're not in jail.
Okay, once again. Who said he was breaking laws?
My brother's fine. Two hours didn't hurt him. But I do have a big problem with police abusing their power. Maybe they had a good reason. If so, I'd like to know what it was.
I didn't say your brother was breaking the law. I was referring to the comment about not being able to leave a bar.
letsgetweird, i think you need to take a breath. nobody is accusing your brother of anything and your slide from "do you think this is reasonable" to "are you fucking kidding me?!??!" and "abuse of power" was whoa.
if you've already decided the police were out of line what the fuck did you post for?
