I found a stray puppy running through the field behind our house yesterday. She was running kind of funny, tail tucked so far I didn't even think she had a tail at first. She was really skiddish and hesitant to come to me at first, but I coaxed her over, pet her through the fence, let her sniff my dog, and eventually let her into the yard.
She is really skinny, hip bones are sticking out, ribs and spine are visible, so I gave her some food, which she took little bites of, ducking away and flinching from me like she was afraid I was going to take it or hurt her for eating it. :-(
It's cold here so I couldn't stay outside with her and was afraid of her getting out of the yard and getting hit by a car so I hauled out our dog's old crate and an old blanket and brought her into the house. She doesn't have any tags so we took her to the vet and there wasn't a microchip either.
H is being a grinch and wants me to keep her in the crate, give her food and water and that's it until we can either find her owners (who are probably abusive assholes) or find a home for her. I, on the other hand, have been giving her lots of snuggles and treats, while trying to potty and crate train. Might as well give her tons of love while she's here, right?
Well, the dogs are already BFFs, and DS is completely bananas about her. He throws a tantrum if I crate her, FFS. Rehoming her is going to break his heart (and maybe mine, a little).
Anyway, sorry for the novel. I just had to put this out there since H is being such a grouch about it.

She's some kind of hound mix. I posted a pic on facebook to see if I could drum up any rehoming interest and now my friends are having a "Name the Puppy" contest.
H's submission is "Welfare, because that's what we'll be on if we keep it."
The fact that her nails are trimmed so nicely makes me want to think that she has a home and she followed her nose and got lost.
A hound, of ANY kind and any mix, will follow its nose and they are hard to bring back.
The person I got my dog from, one of her Coonhounds got out and it was weeks before they could catch her because she was hard core on some scents and wouldn't come home until she was starving hungry.

I am making an honest effort to find her owners if she has any (craigslist, newspaper, etc). H wants to spay her if we're going to rehome her and I'm thinking after he pays for that he won't want to rehome her anymore.
This is pretty much exactly how I got my first dog (as an adult). Same time of year, too. I've had him for 11 years now, BTW. The Humane Society told me that if no one claimed him in 2 weeks, he was ours.

When H got home from work this afternoon we went into the backyard where he started throwing a toy for the dogs. He started talking about how dog food cost was doing to double, same with flea meds, boarding when we go on vacation, blah blah blah.
Then he says "We need to name her. We can't just keep calling her Dog."

Depending where you live, this is the time Of year where people taking hunting dogs out and leave them if they can't find them at the end of the day. They often starve the dogs thinking it will make them hunt better. Be careful and post a vague description, make anyone who responds send a photo and explanation of where and how she was lost.
I own two hounds; one is a dumped hunting dog and they are wonderful.

She actually looks like she might have some greater swiss mountain dog in her? Those are pretty distinctive markings, she is a little lankier though. Just thought I'd mention it because she might get pretty big if that's the case! Congratulations on the new furkid =)

This is so fucking disgusting and sickening. God, I hate people.
Amen, Gypsy.
Similarly, the area we found our dog, we later learned, is notorious for people leaving their dogs "to go back to the wild" because it's more wooded. People are so gross sometimes.
ETA: it sounds like OP's H might be coming around. Give her a name!! Let your LO give her the name.

I love her. I hope you are able to keep her. Sounds like your H is warming to the idea. I just don't know how you can't want to snuggle, kiss and keep that sweet little doggy face.
