I want to add a protein shake a day to my diet and exercise routine, however after a 10 minute amazon.com search I am totally lost on what I really need for protein powder. Can anyone recommend a brand name or even some good recipes for shakes that I can try? I might try to throw some flax seed into my shakes too if you want to try to help me with that as well. Thanks!
Whey protein is the cheapest, and I can't recommend any particular brand over another. I used to get the vanilla flavored tub from Costco, and make a smoothie with a handful of frozen mixed berries (Costco as well), a banana and some soy milk. I'd throw in any fresh fruit or juice I had, and sometimes spinach. I'm a little more nutrition-conscious since my pregnancy/BF, and now use hemp (or a hemp/pea mix) protein powder It's a lot more expensive, but healthier. Since time is an issue now, I make a smoothie base that I freeze in silicone muffin tins. Right now it's 3 handfuls spinach, one package frozen mango, 3 oranges and some coconut water to help it blend. I throw two of those in the blender with some almond milk, banana and whatever random fruit I have plus 2 scoops protein powder. Flax meal is great to add.
I've been using Whey protein after bootcamp - 1 scoop, 1/2 cup frozen fruit, and 1 cup of greek yogurt all blended together. I think it's the designer brand in strawberry

I buy the Muscle Milk from Cytomax when it goes on sale at my 24hr fitness (they sell it for $45/tub but put it on sale for $20/tub about 3x/year). I like the plain chocolate flavor, but I just mix with water and chug it.
I've tried a few different ones and like the flavor of Jay Robb Egg Protein powder in either chocolate or vanilla. I don't mix it with anything usually, but if I do I just make a regular fruit smoothie and add a scoop.
