How does anyone reach their midtwenties (or later adulthood) without a long record of payment history for gas bills, electric bills, phone bills, perhaps car payments?

I didn't pay for anything completely by myself until age 24.
miso: I've had bills in my name since I left home for college at 18. (I've also had a credit card since then but most of my credit history is from other bills since I prefer to use cash).

I can see how this happens where I live. Here the rent usually includes heat and basic cable and phone and the rental agencies don't report payments. When you share an apartment with several people only one name can be on the electric as well so if you aren't that person it doesn't end up on your credit.
