The ILs didn't get H anything for Christmas with the intention of getting him something electronic.
H needs a new laptop. The one he's using is his old lab's and they are coming in town and reclaiming it - so to do his work, he needs a new one.
BIL who has no sense of money and spends his parent's money like it's going out of style has said that ILs would pay for his new laptop. H thinks this is too generous.
I'm tasked with taking MIL and AIL shopping tomorrow while the boys go to a museum. The mall I'm taking them to has an Apple store (he wants a macbook pro).
If they offer to buy it for him there, I will not stop them.

Do the parents have that kind of money to spend? Or by "electronic" we're they thinking $100 range?
IMHO if they have disposable income where they can afford a laptop as a gift for their son, then go for it. Otherwise, I wouldn't feel comfortable accepting a gift that expensive.

They are grown people, I assume, regardless of BIL's promises. If they want to buy him a laptop, they might as well buy him what he wants. It's not evil to make it easier for all of them to do that.

Yes, it'll be about $1300.
Yes, they have the money for it. For perspective, in the last year BIL went on their dime to Prague, Germany for Oktoberfest, Russia with his aunt, and at least two other places I can't think of. And they're paying for his dentistry school. All without blinking an eye. BIL is in his 20s.
They haven't bought H a birthday or Christmas present in the past 3 years, if that makes a difference.
Sent from my iPhone using ProBoards app with typos. Sorry.
I'm not sure I'd recommend it unless you live in their house. If you live with them, they treat you like a king. If you have the audacity to move away to the us, well tough cookies my friend.
Not evil. If they don't want to pay for it they won't offer. Bil sounds a bit special though, that takes a lot of balls to mouch off your parents that much.
