What are yours? Friends of ours are throwing a motto party ( ) in Frankfurt, so we are dressing up as "childhood heroes." Since I will surely be schlepping Butterbaby around all night, I need an uncomplicated costume ... I'm thinking Punky Brewster, but I'm open to suggestions.
And since Aldi has begun selling huge-ass packs of fireworks, the German tradition of setting them off days before NYE has begun. Also, you can buy your little pots of clovers with chimney sweep figurines attached. Or pigs. Germans have interesting good-luck symbols.
I/we used to always go to parties, but since we've moved to our new home, we really haven't done anything and stayed home alone <insert sad face>. The first year was because DH's grandma had been hospitalized the night before and we needed to be ready to hop on a plane/in the car/go go go within minutes. (she made it until we saw her in February!) so we were sad and stayed home and discovered we had an amazing view of the city's fireworks from our rooftop deck. Next year DH's dad had just gotten out of the hospital, but because of his being sick we hadn't made plans, and I was in the middle of a burn-out and just slept or cried all the time, so we stayed home again and watched the fireworks again.
Now this year we tried arranging things, but our friends who we were planning on possibly doing NYE with have crap going on, so we'll likely stay home again, thus making it a tradition to stay home alone and watch fireworks from the roof. I'm totally fine with that too, actually!
We haven't done much in years. There was an unfortunate argument between 2 of my friends at a (small!) house party a few years ago and since then dh refuses to go to their house parties again! Since then we've either stayed in, had quiet enough evenings with various of his friends or with family.
If we get a babysitter we'll be going to friends. Otherwise we'll cook a nice dinner for ourselves
;D They're Canadian, but I can deal with that! On top of the lobsta' we're feasting (and I mean feasting) with MIL's family. Then, partying until the next morning. I've already started drinking water in hopes of avoiding a hangover but I doubt it...

BIL/SIL are coming over. We're having pepper-cheese fondue (as in bell peppers, not spice pepper) and I'm hoping I actually make it to midnight.
Some idiot was setting off fireworks individually last night with like a 2-minute interval in between, so just when we thought s/he was done and were drifting off to sleep, another one went off, jerking us back awake. And one was literally in our courtyard - I saw the light from it. If there had been another one, DH was ready to go out and yell at them. Other than on NYE, it's not allowed to make that much noise after 10pm and it was 11:30. I know we're losers, but lately we've been in bed by like 9:30 at the latest (thank you pregnancy exhaustion).

We set off fire works at midnight, and walk round the neighborhood wishing everyone good luck for the year. We bring along champagne glasses for us, and a bottle to share. Between our bottle and theirs, no one has an empty toasting glass.
The normal traditional stuff we do before then has been cancelled because my asshole ex decided it would be simply brilliant to book my daughter's flight to land at 8 pm. So, best case she is home by 10. Worst case, she and my husband watch fireworks from the car windows on the freeway while I calm the nerves of two under two-and-a-halfs AND entertain my daughter's friend who is spending NYE with us. Did I mention the asshole part?

We're bbqing steaks and have a bottle of champagne in the fridge. I'm glad we're not waiting for the fireworks down by the harbour, it's boiling out today!!! Will just watch it comfortably on tv
We will probably stream bowl games over the Internet. My parents have been here for the last week and are leaving today, so we are kind of exhausted and have eaten WAY too much rich holiday food in the last week.....so we will probably eat something light like pasta, and be in bed by 10.
Boy Toy says there are supposed to be 11 barges of fireworks this year, and we've already seen the two concert stages and the scaffolding for the speakers every 100 feet. We're having a few people over for dinner tonight, and then we'll head down to the beach around 11.
Traditions: We have to wear all white. We will eat whatever number of grapes the locals deem auspicious (Boy Toy didn't know and just bought a few big bunches). You have to jump a certain number of waves on the beach right after midnight. And there's something about lentils (I had lentils in the seams of my coat for two years after the last time I spent NYE with Brazilians), but no one has mentioned it, so I don't know.

Sent from Dick Clark.
True. But the chimney sweep thing is in the Anglo-Saxon world, as well (think Mary Poppins' "Chim-Chiminey... good luck will rub off when I shake hands with you, or blow me a kiss cause that's lucky too" or something to that effect).

We did raclette one year and went to the Zurich fireworks. Last year we made a Christmas goose and had a couple over. This year I bought a cheap electric fondue pot. So we are doing the meat version of that. (Yuck) I wanted the cheese kind. We might go to a huge party at the Dank Haus. But I think it's to big for me and H has my nasty cold.
Oh and I still have to drive back to Chicago. Better get back on the road!

New Year's Eve is my mother's birthday and we always go out for dinner at her favourite restaurant (creole Italian). After that I usually come home and watch tv.
This year we had planned to go out with my younger brother to see a friend of his in a drag show, but DH has decided it would be a better idea to come down with a cold. At 2 in the afternoon he is still convinced he wants, and will be able to go out, but I think we'll be coming home after dinner and ringing in the New Year in front of the tv.
