I actually think an all-inclusive or cruise might be more tolerable than a beach in July. You'll get ocean breezes, and a Caribbean island may be milder than the mid-Atlantic in July (since you mentioned the outer banks). The island get the trade winds that might make it more tolerable. The mid-Atlantic in July is just brutal. 95-105 with high humidity and no wind. My neighbors go to ocean city every July, and the past two years they have said its been too miserable to even be at the beach.
yeah I think an AI/cruise in an area not hurricane prone might work. I really don't want to have to deal with rental cars, making our own food, etc. The simpler the better. Cost is going to be an issue though as 2 of our group of 7 are grad students or underemployed.
The good thing about a cruise in hurricane season is they just reroute you.
We lived this firsthand in October. Our cruise was supposed to go to Grand Cayman and Jamaica. The precursor of Sandy formed near Jamaica and they decided to cancel that and take us to Cozumel. Then they cancels Grand Cayman and we went somewhere else in Mexico. Got back to Miami a day after Sandy passed. It was a bit rocky the last night, but otherwise OK.
If it is just for a weekend you may have a hard time renting a beach house in July. Most are week long. If you can go pre memorial day, you will have better luck.
Is west coast an option? That's where you'll avoid the humidity that makes east coast summers feel so much hotter. Someplace in northern California would be great. It might not be budget enough for the students.
If you have to stay east coast, I agree about going northward to Maine.
San Diego on the beach would probably be nice. SF might be too cold. Sweatshirts in July always seems weird to me.
I would not go anywhere in south--way too hot.
What about a lake cabin in MN/MI/WI. Added bonus that flights to Milwaukee are often dirt cheap from here. I've been to Minneapolis and Detroit in Aug and Jul and it was cooler than here, but really humid.
Another option would go somewhere and shop and go to the spa where a few minutes outside wouldn't matter much.
We rented a cabin at Bryce Resorts in VA a few summers back. You could go see the natural bridge , luray caverns. What about Dollywood/Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg

I second Charleston. It will be hot as hell, but there is tons to do and great places to eat at any price point. You can fly into Charleston with either southwest or air tran (I think southwest) or you can fly into three other airports including a us airways hub within a three hour drive.
