I love William, but I am less wild about Liam. I think Elliott is super cute, too, and I don't know any (whereas both my boys have had Liams, Williams, and/or Olivers in their classes).

William with Liam as a nickname is my all time favorite boy name! DH doesn't like it, though, so I probably won't get to use it.
So, obviously, that's my vote!
If you're worried about popularity, check the Social Security baby name website. More reliable than Baby Center, which is just a survey of their users. Also look at Baby Name Wizard (a website and a book) -- the author talks about name trends.
I wasn't as concerned about popularity after learning that even the #1 most popular name today represents a much smaller percentage of babies born than one of the top names of the 80's did -- there is simply greater diversity in baby names these days. So, while you might have been one of three Jennifers in your first grade class, your child is unlikely to have even one other Emma in hers.
Abigail is uber popular, and even more popular in my state and zip code (which you can play around with on the SSA site), but we haven't run into any other Abigail's her age. I know two who are a couple years older (although they both go by Abby), but that's it, even though it's a top ten most popular name.
William with a nickname of Liam totally sold me. That's so different but not weird, you know? Plus his friends could call him a different nickname when he's older, like Will.
Otherwise I would have voted Oliver or Elliot. Like the kid from ET
My son is Liam, so I'm partial to it. However, there is another Liam at daycare and we do run into it at the park, etc. it was always my favorite boy name, so i didn't let its popularity change my mind.
I like Liam, it's an adorable Irish nickname for William. I'd go with William and call him Liam, but I'm not a fan of nicknames as first names in general. Both versions are in our circle of friends, so not all that original, but certainly classic.
I also LOVE Oliver and would love to name our next little boy Oliver, it was my grandfather's middle name. My DS's name, Martin, is my grandfather's last name, so it might be a little much to have both names in our family. Coincidentally, my grandmother's name was Marjorie which was also mentioned in this thread. It's amazing how all of these names are in style again!
