I have four that are emerging/frontier markets: DEM (Emerging-general) EZA (South Africa), BRXX (Brazil), FRN (Frontier-general). Economies of developing countries are supposed to grow at a faster rate than developed countries going forward, and I like ETFs to get exposure to that.
I have one that holds preferred stock. The price stays fairly steady and the dividend yield is ~6%. It's PGX.
They're all in my roth, so I intend for them to be long term holds.
I use ETFs for my international/emerging market exposure, too. My TSP (aka 401k) doesn't have good international exposure and no emerging markets.
But I picked my ETFs from the list of free ETFs (no trading costs) at my brokerage. So I they may not make sense for you. I like using the fee free ones to dollar cost average without a trading fee and bc it narrows down the list I need to research. You are right, it can be overwhelming.
