If your baby wakes for a period during a nap, but goes back to sleep, do you count that as one continuous nap? For example, say s/he sleeps twenty minutes, wakes for five, and then sleeps another twenty minutes, would that be a real nap, or two catnaps? Does it make a difference whether baby fell back to sleep on his own, or needed help?
I know it ultimately doesn't matter since I can't seem to do anything about it, but I always wonder how I should count those interrupted naps. I'm not talking about a quick startle where eyes open for less than a minute, but a full eyes open, fussing, squirming wake up that requires a shush/pat to get him back down.
Who is asking, and why? If it's your MIL you answer "great, thanks, please wash these dishes", if it's the doctor you say "well, she gets x hours per day, but she does wake at 20 minutes and then go back to sleep again", if it's at mother's group you say "god I'm tired, but there are no scabs on my nipples, yay me!".
LOL. It's pretty much for my own knowledge. I'm looking for any sign that this catnap trend is turning around. Ha! E's been stalling at 20-30 min. naps for a few weeks. I just got him to sleep from 8:30-9:30 AM, but he woke just after 9 for a few minutes, and I did have to shush/pat him back to sleep... which is an improvement over before, where he'd refuse to go back to sleep, but I still don't think I get to count that as a good, chunky nap... it's two catnaps, right? Meh. He starts day care next week and I'll only have to deal with naps on weekends.
