In my state, the minimum is 4 years AND 40 lbs. If he's only 33 lbs. you have a good amount of time to go. For comparison, my 20 month old is 34 lbs, and still under the rearfacing limits on my convertible seat.
Our minimum is 4 years and 40lbs too - my almost 5 year old weighs 31lbs, so she's going to be in a convertible for a while. What about something like a nautilus? when do his seats expire?
My 3 year old is an a britax that can be used as a 5 pt harness until 80 pounds and then as a high back booster.
You should consider your state law (and any state that you plan to travel in) but also consider your child. If your kid fall asleep in the car regularly having something with more constrains is better as it will hold them in place rather than allowing them to slump under the seatbelt.
When do his convertibles expire? If they still have a few years, I would pass them on to DD and get new seats for DS that can be used as a five point harness now, and high back booster in the future.

I switched DD to a 5 pt harness booster a little before 3 when she hit 40 lbs and outgrew her convertible seat. I have the Britax Frontier. I would buy a 5 pt harness booster and not another convertible.
I would get a seat that harnesses for now but can be used as a high back booster later like a Frontier or Nautilus. DS1 is 5.5 yo and about 46" and 44 lbs. He still rides harnessed 99% if the time (we have used a booster a handful of times when traveling). I would not want him in a booster all the time at this age.
