I use it all the time and never have a problem. just take your confirmation with you for the 8pm reservation just in case. but on NYE I think that tables turn slower so you still might have a wait.
We use it all the time and have never had a problem. I could see it being different on a night like tonight, but hopefully you won't have a problem. I would probably have the confirmation email pulled up on my phone just in case though.
You should be fine. Like PP said, I've only had problems when they say they don't have anything open until after 10pm, but when I call the restraunt I have my pick of times.
A lot of restaurants don't put their entire table inventory on Open Table, precisely so that people who prefer to call or walk in can still do so - no biggie.

That's not the issue here though - it's the opposite. The restaurant said they were full but Open Table let them book anyway.
Blush, did you have any problems with your reservation?

But I think the end point is still the same. A lot of restaurants save a certain # of tables for phone or online reservations, and walk-ins. The reservations available by phone for that slot were full, but the tables reserved for Open Table were still available.

All the time.
Very recent I was at a mall, and the restaurant we wanted to go to said it was an hour-plus wait. We walked away, checked Open Table and got a res for the same restaurant for 10 minutes later. We were seated with no problem. Some restaurants reserve tables for specific types of reservations.

Yes -- this is true.
Some restaurants only allow a certain number of their tables to be reserved, period, some allow a certain number to be reserved by phone and a certain number to be reserved online, etc. So sometimes you'll be able to get a reservation one way but not another (or you might not even be able to get a reservation, but could be seated immediately as a walk-in). It works both ways.
