I'm going to try to read 35 books this year (5 more than this year).
Also, I'm going to read the last couple Jon Krakauer books I haven't read and about half of the Isabel Allende books I haven't read.
I successfully challenged myself to reading 12 different genres that I usually didn't read. Like I said, I was sucessful but I felt really scattered, so I won't be doing anything like that again.

I think I'll stick with the 50 books in the year. I am going to avoid the kindle freebies since I blame them for my reading funk. I'm also going to get active with my irl book club again.

Hmm... I think my goal is to not spend any money on books this year. I have SO many books loaded on my kindle (good ones that I bought cheap) and so many paper books that I haven't read. Plus the library. Plus all the free classics.
As for a number, it will probably be 25 or 30 for the year.
My goal is to read 20 for the year, one of those being Don Quixote. I figure I wont get burned out if I give myself a good long timeframe to finish it!
my goal is still 75 books for the year. I hit 58 or 59, I think. I would have hit 75 except for a huge reading funk in August and September, when I was reading fanfic instead of "real" books.

I always shoot for 4 books a month. This year I finished 42, which is 6 short of my goal. Next year I am trying to read more, but that means I have to waste less time online.
And I will be renewing my search for a job, and if I get one, that will eat into my reading time. But I'm still sticking with 48 books.
My goal was 112 last year, so it's 113 this year. It's high enough to be a challenge but not overwhelmingly so. I'd like to read a few more classics this year, but I don't have any specific goals otherwise.

Last year, my goal was 40, but I ended up three shy. In 2011, it was 60, and I read 61. I'm sticking with 40 this year, but since I'm going to be staying home with babyshout, I'll probably make it through more than that.
I am not going to set a number goal. I am just going to try to read as many of the 'scary' books that I have been avoiding for the las couple years. I think I will start with Gone With the Wind.
I don't really have a goal this year. I'm just going to read. I try to cross off a few classics every year, but I'm not sure which ones I want to take on yet.

I'm setting my goal at 165 - but I think that's going to be a stretch. I read 165 toward a goal of 150 in 2012, and I dont want to read fewer books than I did last year - but there is a lot of fluff on the '12 list. I want to read more nonfiction this year.
2012 was the first year that I tracked my reading, and I ended up at a nice round 52 (average length of 499 pages; yes, I am a geek for keeping track of that). I don't think I'm going to set a numerical goal for this year, but I am setting a goal of reading some of the books currently on my shelf before buying more new ones.
I made it to 112 in 2012, but I'm not going to set a numeric goal for 2013. I am going to do the following each month though:
2 books I already own on Kindle 1 book I already own a physical copy of 1 book that's considered a "classic" (most likely from before 1900) 2 books from the MLA top 100 English-language novels of the 20th century (the board's list): www.modernlibrary.com/top-100/100-best-novels/
I figure the rest of my reading will be library books or any kind of book club or read along that comes up.
Oh, and I'd like to finish any series I've started and not finished. Which basically means Black Dagger Brotherhood and Sookie Stackhouse.

This is the kind of goal I should set to get me through the waiting pile. I'll probably steal your ideas in a modified way.

I am scaling back from 50 books because I read a lot more fluff than substance to reach my goal. I don't mind quick and easy reads once in a while, but I want to challenge my brain a little more this year. I think 30 is a more feasible number for 2013.
I hit my 75 goal for 2012, but like a lot of the pp have said there was more fluff involved than I really wanted. I've dropped it to 60 this year, which should be good. I've got a few longer books that I want to get through this year, so that helps the lower number make sense.
I set it for 75. I'd like to set little mini goals in that though, like reading at least 10 books by authors from different countries. I get sucked into always reading American and British authors so I'd like to expand a bit and get alternate perspectives.
Hi all! I'm new here I'm a bit intimidated by all your goals! I used to read a lot when I was a kid, but I just kinda got out of it for some reason. I've occupied my time with video games, TV, internet, stuff like that. So in an attempt to get back into reading a good book, I've been lurking around here looking for recommendations. We got a Kindle Fire for Christmas so I really want to make (proper) use of it!
So my main goal this year is to read one book a month. It's not much, but it's more than I've been reading in the last few years (minus a couple months a few years ago where I read a bunch of the WoW books and loved them). If I read more, awesome! I also want to read some of the classics I've never read, and reread some books I read in high school but only vaguely remember (Life of Pi comes to mind, with the movie out now).
Hi everyone! I'm also new here! I have always loved to read, however, the last two years I have been in a reading slump. Over the Christmas holiday weekend I picked up American Gods by Neil Gaiman. I'm halfway through it and it is very interesting!
I set a goal to read 25 books this year. One of my goals for the new year is to read more. The only problem is, I am in school so that leaves little time for me to read. So, I am going to make a point to take at least an hour out of the week for some reading time. That way, I can still get some reading in while concentrating on my school work. Hopefully, I can fit in more. But my main goal is to not get back into a reading slump.
Welcome to the new folks! Don't be intimidated by other people's goals; everyone has a different life situation and different priorities. Something else to keep in mind is that 35 of the books I "read" last year were actually audiobooks that I listened to while driving, running, and cleaning.

I love the idea of reading books from different "lists" or genres. I kind of did that, but I wasn't really disciplined with keeping track of everything. I may have to try that this year.

Thanks! I've considered doing the audio book thing at work. We can listen to iPods while we're working so if I'm doing something where I'm actually at my desk for a while, that might be a nice break from the same songs I listen to!
I would love to read 5 books that aren't assigned to me and read just for fun. I am an English Major right now, so this would be quite an accomplishment.
