DS2 had a sinus infection, red ears, and a cough. He was on an antibiotic for 10 days. Two days after he finished the antibiotic we were back at the pedi because his cough came back (it was very juicy, frequent, and deep) and he was wheezing. He was diagnosed with bronchiolitis and an ear infection. He was put on a different antibiotic for 5 days. Today is day 4 and his cough is still pretty bad sounding (occasional and no wheezing), but better than it was on Saturday.
Would you wait until after finishing the antibiotic to call, or would you call today or tomorrow, or not call unless it gets worse? He has not had a fever and I think he's getting enough oxygen, I just thought by now he would be all better.
Coughs can take up to a month to go away, it takes awhile for the lungs to heal completely. If it would make you feel better then take him in, but if it's just the cough bothering you it is probably fine. Low oxygen makes for a pretty lethargic kid (my daughter wouldn't sit up,smile, talk, etc) when he oxygen levels were low.
i would wait - taking in a child to the doc just exposes them to MORE germs - and there's not much that can be done at this point.... as others said, coughs can last a long time. For my boys- it's mostly an all winter type of thing! One has cough variant asthma - so he coughs the whole winter - we monitor it with an inhaler, and make sure it doesn't sound like it's in his chest- but otherwise, no reason for him to see the doc.
