We used a Bumbo sitting on the dining table from 5-7 months until he could sit unassisted, then a full-size high chair (family heirloom) from 7 months on. I know you're not supposed to use a Bumbo on an elevated surface (don't flame me!) but we only used it when one of us was sitting right there in front of him. We loved the Bumbo b/c he could see us eat, and when he dropped his spoon/toy it fell on the table and stayed clean, so we could give it right back to him. I think the exposure to mealtime early on has been part of the reason Baby Led Weaning has worked so well for him.
we used bumbo seats, too, until they could sit on their own. I would not buy a chair simply for this timeframe... they will be sitting on their own before you know it.
yeah- they will be sitting on their own sometime in the next 2 months most likely (not sure if they were preemies?). Having twins myself and knowing how hard it is on space --- i'd just keep doing what you are doing until they are truly ready for a high chair - and then get what you want (either space savers, etc).
we didn't use space savers because we needed the chairs when my family came over for dinner - so we had 2 high chairs- and yes, they took up a ton of space, but it worked better for us that way.
we did have some travel type space savers we brought with us to family parties, bbqs, etc.

I have a FP space saver that reclines. It doesn't really take up any more space while reclined - the base stays in the same place, and the seat part kind of moves forward as it reclines. My 6 week old sits in it whenever she is awake during our meals. You can kind of see what I'm talking about in the pics on Amazon:
Our Space Saver reclines just fine. I'm not sure what you mean about that feature being wasted. I recommend a Space Saver, and we definitely used ours before the kids could sit unassisted.
Friends of mine have a similar chair to the FP one, but made by The First Years. They put their four-month-old in it, reclined, and pull her right up to the table. It works great!
I have a FP space saver. I used it when my first daughter was 3 months old until she ws 2. Now my 9 week old daughter sits in it every night at dinner time, and we started her in it when she was about 6 weeks. The recline works fine for us.
My nearest Ikea is an 8 hour drive. My mom is in Chicago though, so not too far for her to get to Ikea and mail me stuff if it's really worth it.
We have a huge dining room table and half the chairs are stashed in the basement and the table is pushed against the wall. We don't have a shortage of chairs, just places to put them. It's hard to part with furniture because we move so often and we never know what will fit in our next house.
Yes. I *love* it. I love that it is so easy to clean. The legs come off so it's not too much space if you really need to put it away. It was ~ $25. I started putting DS in it around 4.5 months and he did great with it.
I didn't want one that goes on a chair because we don't use our table/chairs and our house is so small that we put them in storage.
ETA: Do you ever get to Grand Forks? I have to go there once a month and could bring 2 from IKEA...
