Are they considered to be generally safe and not a scam to use? Basement toilet overflowed when I was taking a shower upstairs, and DH thinks the sewer main is clogged. I'm really nervous how much this is going to cost us.

They tend to be overpriced and some franchises will misrepresent what is wrong. Could you get other recommendations from friends or family in your area? Otherwise try calling your local independent hardware store for a rec.
We had to have a sewer line replaced but I'll cross my fingers yours is just in need of a snake!
They're good in a pinch if you need someone out ASAP. We've used them twice for similar reasons and the snake cost us about $500 each time. This always happens to us on a holiday or a Sunday.
