When I was out with friends for dinner New Year's Eve, my husband took a sip of my drink. And then noticed a cockroach floating in it.
The manager apologized and took a round of drinks off our bill, but everyone else was dissatisfied with the adjustment and thought our whole meal (there were four of us) should have been comped. What do you think a reasonable adjustment would have been?
I would not have eaten anything that they served me and would have refused to pay at all. There is no way I would have stayed for dinner after seeing that. Had you already eaten when the cockroach was noticed in the drink?
I think a comped round of drinks and an apology is generous enough.
This is what I think. Not like they did it on purpose.
If you're really that disgusted than just don't go back, no need to cause a scene. I've seen a lot more disgusting things happen behind the scenes when I use to work in restuarants than a dead cockroach in a drink especially in big chain restaurants.
i was comped a meal once when living in FL when a man at the table next to us had a HUGE roach crawling on his table, that then went onto his shirt- I saw it and that was how they found it (after they saw it scamper acorss the table and were fraeking out looking for it).
the owner comped MY meal, too - and it wasn't even near my table..... IN MY DRINK?? I would have left and not paid at all - too grossed out to eat.
The drink was served at the end of the meal, so we did not eat (or drink) anything else once the cockroach's lifeless corpse came floating to the top of the glass.
We did not make a scene, although DH expressed his displeasure to the manager. I decided that nothing they could do would induce me to return, but I guess if they had comped the meal, my friend might not have shared the experience on twitter / fb.

I would have most definitely left immediately and then also called the health inspectors. If they have roaches with the lights on and in food or drink prep areas then they have a massive problem going on behind the scenes.

Roaches happen, but ew. I don't know what is appropriate, but there is no way I could eat there again.. and if this had happened prior to eating, I wouldn't have eaten there.
I would have left, so no need to comp my meal. No scene, just simply left. Had I already eaten, I would have expected my meal to be taken care of. Maybe I'm overreacting, but that's pretty gross to me. I get that most restaurants probably have some kind of pests present, but I would expect it to be in control enough that it doesn't manifest itself in my cocktail.

I am having a hard time imagining a scenario that a roach could end up in the glass. It seems like it must be overrun with roaches to have that many to get into a glass. But who knows.
Anyway, because of what you said above that is bolded, the manager probably should have done more to keep you guys happy and from telling all your friends. Comping 4 meals and drinks is better than losing the business of everyone you know.
I just want to know how a dead roach made it into a cocktail.
Dead, meaning it didn't scurry up the glass when the glass was sat down. Did it fall from the ceiling? If dead roaches are falling from the ceiling there are other issues at hand here.
I would actually feel much butter if there was a live roach on my table or something. At least there's more of an explanation for that. DEAD ROACH IN A CUP. How does that happen?

I think the whole meal should have been comped. I found a dead roach in my hot and sour soup a few months ago. Well, that's not entirely accurate- I found it IN MY MOUTH after I took a bite of the soup. The food had been delivered, so we immediately called the restaurant. They were unapologetic, but sent the delivery guy to refund the cost of our entire meal. We gave all of the food back to the delivery guy. Luckily, I had had only a few bites of the soup and DH hadn't even started eating.
I called the health inspector the next day. The health inspector believed that the roach was from a bag of dried mushrooms used to make the soup, because she found no evidence of roaches in the restaurant. I felt a little better that it died long before it ended up in the soup.
At least it wasn't a used tampon stuck in the toilet seat covers, right?
Yeah, I haven't been back to that place.
I found a bug in a salad at a restaurant once and they brought me a new salad and that was it. I did go back to the place because I assumed it landed flying around since we were eating outside the restaurant (inside a shopping center but outside the restaurant proper. Kind of like an indoor terrace area). Roach in a drink is decidedly more disgusting. I think a comped round of drinks is acceptable. And EW cowgirl. In.your.mouth? Ew.

I can still feel that thing on my tongue.
I would freaking DIE if this happened. OMG that makes me not even want to eat out, period. Thank god roaches are not common around here.
I don't know what they should have done in the OP. Since you had already eaten I think comping the drinks was appropriate. I'm guessing if you find a roach in your food/drink, you'll never be back anyway so the place isn't really helping anything for themselves by comping your meal, unfortunately. Usually they'd do something like that in hopes you'd be back, KWIM?
Honestly even if they had comped my meal under those circumstances, you bet I'd be telling everyone I know not to go there. So it would have been nice of them to do it, but I don't think they probably hurt themselves MORE by not doing it.

All they needed to do was comp the drinks because if you really had an issue with the sanitary level of the restaurant, you would have left. Whats the point of getting your meal comped when you knew going in that you were in a questionable place?
