I've been to SF many times in the last 10 years. My mom has never been but has always wanted to go, so for her birthday last week, I surprised her with a trip. I'm also bringing along my younger (25) sister. Going to be there 1/18-1/21 and I really want to make the trip special for my mom. I know that she'll want to do a lot of touristy stuff, but I'm looking for something maybe I haven't even done/seen yet. Maybe a cool walking tour of some sort (did this in Chicago and it was awesome)? Thanks in advance!
There's a Chinatown walking tour, though I've never done it so I can't personally recommend it.
I did one of these with my DH and MIL, and we had a great time. It took us through several interesting pharmacies (that had live chickens for remedies), Chinese groceries, etc. I'd been to SF several times before that and hit the normal highlights, so this was something fun and different. It ended with lunch at a dim sum restaurant.

Friends just did this walking tour of the Haight Ashbury with the guide Izu: www.haightashburytour.com/. I don't know if your mom was into the whole hippie movement, but it sounds like Izu has some crazy memories, and it could be a fun blast from the past if so.
