I usually hang out on MM/MMMoms, and lurk on ML, but decided to come here to hang out some too!
DH and I just bought our house last January. I have yet to do any decorating! Its a 1950's Cape Cod. We love it! Our biggest goal right now is to get the basement finished off, but at this point that is still some time off in the future. We're hoping within the next 2-3 years. Our plans include adding a theater room down there and an additional bedroom/office.
For now, I want to focus on the main living areas. I'm trying to find some inspiration for our living room. We have a brown sofa and loveseat, and our TV stand and media cabinet are Ikea's brown/black finish. Our carpet is a sage green color. As much as I'd love to rip up the carpet to expose the hardwoods, I can't seem to convince DH to do it. He is a lover of living room carpet, lol. Anyway, I'd love to paint the stark white walls. What color would you go for with the colors we already have in the room?
I look forward to finding inspiration here on D&R! (Is that what you guys still call yourselves over here on GBCN?)
?? It does not compute for me that someone would voluntarily keep w2w carpet when hardwood is underneath If it was my DH, on his next business trip that shit would be out of there LOL. Would he be willing to compromise with an area rug that can be vacuumed under/sent out for thorough cleaning/replaced easily when gross? If the carpet stays, I like sage/brown/cream together. Our bedroom has sage curtains, and I used Behr Antique White on the walls with lots of maroon and sage in the rug. I had Behr's Teepee Brown in our old bedroom with green, and I really liked the color, but our new bedroom is smaller so I wanted to go a bit lighter.

Welcome!
I'm still having trouble with keeping carpet with confirmed hardwoods. Even hardwoods in bad shape are way better than carpet. Have you tried the allergy route to convince him? Carpet is terrible for people with allergies (provided anyone in your house has them) so the LR and BRs should be a hard surface.
If you have to keep the carpet, I'd go with a neutral tan/beige unless you are comfortable with color. If you can pull out the carpet (not really that much work, except for the garbage man), I think you'd have a lot more options.
DH is the one with allergies in the house! You'd think that would be enough to convince him, but nope!
I pulled up the carpet in the one bedroom while he was OOT on business over the summer. He was fine with it there, but only in the bedrooms he says.
The carpet in the room already is a sage color. We're not looking to replace it right now, as its still in pretty good shape, and really, I like the color of it.
I've been thinking of a light tan/khaki kind of color for the walls, maybe even leaning a little more toward the cream color. As much as I'd love to put sage on the walls, I think it might be too much with the sage carpet.
I am also wondering what to do for our big picture window. We still have the vertical blinds up that the previous owner left behind. They're in rough shape, and have that lovely yellow color to them from cigarette smoke. The previous owners were pretty heavy smokers, but apparently pretty darn amazing at removing the smell! The only evidence of their smoking is the discoloration of the blinds and smoke residue on the walls. Anyway, what kind of window treatment would work best for the picture window? There is a radiator directly under the window too, so I don't know that I feel comfortable with curtains all the way to the floor in this situation.
