I put them in Kai's oatmeal so they're all plumped up and soft. He likes them. Maybe I'm about to find out that raisins are poisonous to babies or something??

they aren't. I have a few pouches of Apple, Raisin, Quinoa and J love it
I was told that babies aren't able to digest them yet - so what goes in is what comes out! As far as I know, there is no other reason than that - so if you are good with raisin poops, then you should be ok!!!
My cookbook says they present a choking hazard b/c they are sticky, same as with PB.
Yes I would say Claire was close to 2 when I gave them to her. Another issue is that the raisins can stick to each other and form a choking hazard, so if you give them just offer a couple at a time so they don't make a raisin ball of chokiness.
I give L cinnamon raisin bagels and they don't seem to be getting digested - they come out how they went in! She usually doesn't eat a lot of them, usually 2 or 3 I would say.

What I don't get though, is that "they" say to avoid whole grapes because THEY are just the right size to block the babes windpipe. But how can a grape and a raisin both fit this criteria!
blueberries have to be squashed so they don't choke. I figure raisins are about the same size PLUS sticky. That to me is bad. Also, any dried fruit can constipate because they rehydrate in the tummy with whatever liquid is there. Even prunes should be soaked a bit or they will do the opposite of what they are supposed to do.

How wide is a 9m old's esophogus? Livestrong via google is telling me they can't have peas because they can block a 9m old's windpipe. A rasin is smaller than a pea and harder to chew than a grape. Right?
I'm not saying don't give a rasin to a kid. My kid chokes on purees.

Meh. I'd say raisins and peas are similar in size. But maybe we have Chernobyl raisins here. I personally wouldn't give them to a baby. And giving them to toddlers in huge amounts makes for highly disturbing diaper content. Not that it ever happened with H or anything ...

I think DD was most like 18 months. The only thing the kid ever almost for real choked on was a blueberry and it was squished. Since raisins are harder I can see it being a choking hazard.
As for the grape thing, from what I've read with toddlers and grapes (hot dog discs, too) is that they are not easily dislodged during the Heimlich, not so much that the size makes them any more dangerous. I confess I still cut DD's grapes into quarters after hearing about a 4 year old choking to death on a grape half.

that's so horrible! I keep thinking of choking as a "baby" thing which I know is silly as they are probably even more likely to choke as toddlers (running around eating and such)?
We are not allowed to even serve our residents with Alzheimer or Dementia anything round like hot dogs or grapes because of the choking risk. Our old E.D. had a resident choke to death on a hot dog.
I didn't give DS1 raisins until he was 18 months or so. And even then, they are just sugar mostly so I wasn't that keen on it. But yeah, where is Ernie and MrBufflo??

We went through a phase where she ate so many and I felt bad about it, but it was the only way to make sure she kept pooping
