I have been planning to have one for awhile now, but this January challenge has me going full steam getting rid of clutter and things I no longer use. The hard part for me is finding a place to store all the stuff (instead of immediately dropping it to goodwill). I have so much baby stuff, kitchen, old decor, etc. Anyone else thinking about a garage sale this year? When will you have yours?

I know lol. I hold onto my kid stuff and sell at a consignment sale that comes through twice a year, but I usually just donate the rest to Goodwill. I work and don't get PTO (part time at two offices) so I find it easier to do it that way vs. take time off to have a garage sale.
Oh guys!!! Boooo!!! I was looking for a support group, lol. Hmm, now I'm questioning everything. I suppose I could take some of the kid items to a consignment shop. I don't care about making much money off kids clothes. I was just thinking it would just be easier to pull it out, throw it on a few tables and walla... Instant $300.
ive made really good money in the past from yard sales, like $1000 in a weekend type sales, but it's a lot of work and requires a lot of good stuff. i took a lot of time to clean and stage things on tables just so and that brought in a higher price. but of course i had the time and needed money then and i had nice things to sell. i'd be hard pressed to do it again now.
if i have something really nice that will actually sell, i post it for sale on my facebook so that i'm not dealing with craigslist crazies and it usually goes within a day to a friend, or friend of a friend through word of mouth.
otherwise, just donate and take the tax write off.
When I lived on Main Street (literally), I held four yard sales each year. Our town has a ordinance that limits the numbers of yard sales each year. A handful of friends and I would get together and hang out on the front lawn for the day. It was a great way to get rid of things we no longer wanted. We always made money. We never bothered to price everything; but we hung out all day. We would meet up at 7 am to start the process and shut down at 3 pm. One of us would talk her husband into making a lunch run to a local place. The only special thing we did was have $10 in quarters and $25 in ones on hand.
I moved last year and live in a subdivision. We got together for a yard sale and even with a bunch of signs, we got very little turnout.
There is a swap site on FB that I've been selling things on. Every week I pick 5 things to sell. I think I'm going to do this instead of a garage sale. We don't have much anyway since we just moved and weeded stuff out.
We moved the end of September and I'm changing our color scheme so I have tons of stuff to get rid of. Our new subdivision does a spring yard sale and I'm definitely going to participate. Right now I'm just storing everything in the unfinished basement.
I live too far in the sticks for a garage sale to be effective. I had one once with some friends before I got married. We all actually had decent stuff and I think I walked away with like $22.00 or something when it was all said and done. Too much work. Too little return.
I'm also uptight about storing clutter. Like gives me anxiety and you know I'm lax otherwise. If I want it gone, I want it gone now. I'm not clearing clutter just to store it somewhere else.
My opinion is also swayed because my school is like 2 blocks from a goodwill sort of place. I just throw it in the car and drop it off. Easy Peasy. No worries or stress. Our taxes from being self-employed are also weird so the deduction does me so little good that it's not worth the work either.
Do you have friends that want some of your kid stuff? In my circle of family and friends we pass that stuff around all the time. The first person to get sick of it just donates it. No harm done. That can get tricky too though..we just have the expectation of, "I don't want it back, I don't care what happens to it" and we're all happier.
I had one this past summer and was really disappointed with the turnout. I would only do it again if I was doing it with several other families. I didn't have enough furniture/big stuff either. Mostly decor and kitchen stuff. I was surprised at how little I made.
If I have really nice stuff to get rid of I CL it. If I just want it gone immediately with little effort I Freecycle it. If it's little odds and ends I will do charity drop-off.
I live on a corner on a pretty decently trafficed street, so I thought I would have more yard sale customers than I did. Really think about your options for turnout if you decide to have the sale.

I do, and I have given a lot of our baby stuff away. I've even passed it to my mom, so that she can have a swing and other baby equipment for the grandkids. I guess I'll just wait and see. If our HOA has a scheduled date for a neighborhood garage sale, I probably will do it just for Thursday and Friday morning. If not, I'll just donate a lot and then try to sell some of the bigger items at consignment or craigslist.
