I have 3 newborn onesies and no 0-3 onesies. We have practically no clothing in this range. I figure I should at least snag a few onesies in each of these ranges, even though I may receive some as gifts.
How many in each size did you need/want? I don't want to hit that number myself (now) but I want a rough idea of what's average so I don't over buy.
I also know not all infants fit into newborn clothing and jump right to 0-3.
LOL, we had hardly anything when DD was born, and DH went out the night she came home and bought out everything that said nb. She was in them for 13 weeks

I do not know where to buy them but the best 0-3 onesies are the ones with the side closure. It allows you to get it on the baby without having to put her head through a hole. All of my babies, who have weighed in the low 8s, wore newborn onesies for a good bit.
I suspect you'll be early, but the best advice we got was not to buy 0-3 mos stuff. Even if the 3-6 mos stuff is huge the baby won't move much that the size of the clothing really matters. Most of the 0-3 mos stuff we got was gifts and my first 2 were out of 0-3 mos within 2 weeks. DS3 is still wearing 0-3 mos (j/k but he's almost 5 and still wearing some 18 mos stuff)
I really like Carters and they have sales/clearance on their website all the time. How much to get depends on how often you'll be doing laundry. We did laundry every few days at first so we only had like 3-4 newborn size jammies and maybe half a dozen onesies. We bought more after she arrived and it was clear she was going to be in that size for quite awhile.
For 0-3 she was also in that size for a very long time and I had too many onesies (over a dozen) since I received so many as gifts. I think we had about 7 or so jammies in 0-3.
Carters has been my go-to from the beginning because I like how everything fits true to size and that they keep their colors consistent so you can mix and match really easily.

ON plain onesies are nice and soft. ON clothes are hit or miss for quality and sizing, but the plain white onesies were my favorite. Carters is nice, too. Gerber sucks.
ETA: I had big babies (DS1 born at 38 weeks- 8 lbs 9oz; DS2 born at 40 weeks - 9lbs 4 oz) and they never worn newborn clothes. At first 0-3 were a tiny bit big, but they only wore them for a few weeks until moving to 3-6 mos sizes.
Any clothes I've bought have pretty much been by the box or bag off CL. Generally less than $1 per piece. eBay is another good option. Baby stuff is just SO lightly used.
DS was 9 lbs 4 oz at birth and never fit into NB clothes. Which sucked, because his adoooorable coming home outfit was NB size We have about a dozen 0-3 mo onesies which was plenty. 6-8 would have been fine. He was in them for about 6 weeks.
Ditto pugz, I love the Carter's brand and still do. Good quality, the cotton is just the right weight. Gerber is too thin IMHO. I've never had a Carter's item deteriorate in the wash, which is more than I can say for ON, CP, and Gerber. The Carter's clothes all match each other great. We have a ton of hand-me-downs and I always go for the Carter's ones first.
ETA: Have you had your shower yet? I wouldn't buy any clothes until after your shower. I registered for zero clothes on purpose (we had 3 bins of hand me downs already) and I still got a TON of NB, 0-3, and 3-6mo clothes. More than I could have ever needed.
E was 19.5" and almost 8 pounds at birth, and most newborn stuff was actually a bit big on him for the first couple weeks, so I'm glad we had it! He's just now starting to move into 3-6 month stuff, so we definitely used 0-3m stuff. My favorite basic onesies are the Disney Cuddly Bodysuits. You can buy them on Amazon. Don't be scared by the "Disney" part... these are solid-color, well-made onesies that will fit for a long time because of the "add-an-inch" snaps. I really love them.
I know you didn't ask this but I wouldn't buy them until after your shower. We just had our shower and the majority of the clothes were newborn to 3 months. Or buy the Carter's ones and save the receipts. I have no clue how my baby is going to wear all these clothes.
I'd honestly look for someone selling a lot on CL or Ebay. 1. Everyone buys NB and 0-3 as gifts 2. As you can see, not all babies wear either size for very long (if ever)
With those 2 facts combined, there is almost no demand for used NB and 0-3 months clothes, and they are usually in like new condition. You can probably pick them up for pretty close to free. For the record, my children were both in NB and 0-3 for a while. I even had to pick up a few preemie outfits for my 6.8 lb full term baby so that he had something for pictures that wasn't baggy. I would pick up at least 10-12 items in each of those sizes.
And I received almost no clothes at either of my showers. From what I know, people love to buy clothes for baby girls, but not so much for boys... which is true from what I've seen. Fine with me, since it meant people actually gifted us items from our registry.
I do love clothing from Carter's, but I have to watch out for stupid slogans. A pack of onesies will look like a good deal, until I realize two of the five say stupid things like "Daddy's Little Slugger."
Carter's return policy is awesome, they fit true to size, and the quality is great for the price. They do sales often and you can sign up for coupons. They sell white onesies in sets of 4 or 5. Our DS still wears a white onesie under every outfit/PJs at 19 months old.
Dd is 4 months today and still in 0-3 for mostly everything. She 6.15 at birth and in newborn until she was just about a month old. She's long so she grows out of clothes in the length first.

I hate this, too. There's a sleeper on sale on their website right now for $6 that I want, but when you zoom in, you realize that the tab sewn across the chest area doesn't say "Carter's" it says "mommy loves me".

These look great! I think the ability to extend the snap area would be fantastic as we're going to use cloth diapers. The colors are terrific, too. I'm not a huge fan of solid white, but to like solids. They have great multi-packs with fun solids! Thanks for the suggestion!!

Yep! We use cloth as well, but are currently using disposables at daycare, and these fit with both kinds of diapers. The colors are great, and not necessarily typical "baby" colors. They mix and match well with other clothes.

This was DS. He was in newborn for about a month, 0-3 until 4 mo and still in 3-6.
I get a lot of his clothes at Kohls, ON online or Target (not too much). I love the Carter's brand and Kohls said you can return anything for 12 mo. I bought some sale stuff for a few bucks and they said I could always return with the receipt or credit card for a year.
We liked the plain white Carter's onesies and still really like the Old Navy Onesies. But the Disney ones were my absolute favorites. They were especially great as DD is a long, thin baby so as she outgrew by length, they didn't look baggy.
Avoid Gerber onesies like the plague. They run really small
I don't understand the people who go right into 0-3 month stuff. C was 9 lb, 5 oz and still wore NB stuff for at least 2-3 weeks.
Side snap onesies are great. We had a few Zutano ones from Target we loved.
DS was 9lbs and wore NB size for a week or two, but he fit the 3m just as well. I would've been fine without any NB clothes, and I think when people give that advice, that's what they mean... that NB size isn't a necessity for some kids.
However, I think CloudBee is likely to need NB outfits.
I agree about the sidesnap onesies. I also liked Carters (regular, not so much their Just For You line).

Ditto everyone else on the Carter's. Their onesies were amazing -- DD wore one to bed every night until she potty trained around 3. They run true tomsize or even a little big -- the biggest ones we had were size 24 months, and DD fit into them at three. She wore the 0-3 ones until she was 6 months.
I'd also make sure to pick up some kimono style shirts -- they snap on the side. I really didn't like putting stuff over DD's head at first, plus I didn't want a onesie over her umbilical cord. She lived in those kimono shirts and little cotton pants until maybe three weeks or so.
Oh, and I'd also pick up some of those little cotton pants. They'll be sold near the onesies -- again, we had Carter's brand. I got DD home, then I realized I had no pants for the poor child. My MIL ran out and bought us baby pants :-)
We didn't have any nb clothes because I had heard that some babies don't fit in them. She was swimming in the outfits we brought to the hospital and ended up fitting in nb clothes for the first month. She was 7 lb 11 oz at birth.
Ditto the suggestions to buy used. NB clothes are easy to find secondhand in excellent/like new condition. I bought a bunch on Craigslist and at garage sales (which I realize is a bad time of year for now). I'm now on a local FB swap page and I get a lot of nice things for cheap there.
