I'd say in total you'd want to have 3-4 newborn, and 6-8 of the 0-3size. They grow out of the newborn clothes super fast.
I agree that anything that snaps up the front so you don't have to mess with pulling the shirt over their heads is gold.
People tend to get you the small sizes at showers so I wouldn't sweat getting more than 3-4 before then. Of course I guess you'd just leave the tags on and return some if you get inundated. Ok I'm rambling.
I do love clothing from Carter's, but I have to watch out for stupid slogans. A pack of onesies will look like a good deal, until I realize two of the five say stupid things like "Daddy's Little Slugger."
I hate this, too. There's a sleeper on sale on their website right now for $6 that I want, but when you zoom in, you realize that the tab sewn across the chest area doesn't say "Carter's" it says "mommy loves me".
I hate that stuff.
I will check them out for white onesies, though!
Hehe I love that stuff! My favorite onesie of DS's right now says "Daddy's Big Guy"
I don't know if you're a fan of consignment stores, but the Once Upon a Child by my home was running a sale of50 cents each for short-sleeved onsies this weekend. I picked up a bunch (carters & old navy) for a friend.
My favorite basic onesies are the Disney Cuddly Bodysuits. You can buy them on Amazon. Don't be scared by the "Disney" part... these are solid-color, well-made onesies that will fit for a long time because of the "add-an-inch" snaps. I really love them.
These look great! I think the ability to extend the snap area would be fantastic as we're going to use cloth diapers. The colors are terrific, too. I'm not a huge fan of solid white, but to like solids. They have great multi-packs with fun solids! Thanks for the suggestion!!
I'm taking this advice too! I just put some in my Amazon Shopping cart! Thanks, I'd never seen these before!
Both my kids were in NB clothes for the first few weeks (DS1 was 7lbs.4oz. and DS2 was 6lbs.6oz., both at term). We ended up buying extra NB onesies after they were born. Carter's was my favorite fit, but you do have to avoid the stupid slogans. I love Baby Gap for boys.

All her onesies were worn underneath her other clothes. I was sad nobody saw her cute sayings, but you guys would be happy.
