We stayed at 'the cove' (a newer part of Atlantis) about five years ago when it first opened. There's an adult only pool, very $$$ drinks that are freakin delish with fresh fruits, and great restaurants. There's also a casino and a nightclub. So if you want an adult only vacation but to still enjoy the other stuff - last river, sliding under sharks, the pyramid slide - you can have the best of both worlds.
And I have the opposite experience of everyone else but we were in a brand new area. It is expensive but the only thing we had to pay for was spa treatments or off site activities we did (like swimming with the dolphins) bc it was a company trip for DH.
I saw the commercials as well, but really if you are going to want to travel just for you and your H, look for adults only, I think there is a secrets and a few other adult only places there.

I haven't ever been without the kids, but I do think DH and I have a fair amount of fun as well. We go each year b/c we own a place down there, but that decision was largely motivated by having the kids. DH loves all the big water slides. I like the river rapids and the various pools. The one restaurant we really like on property is Mesa grill, otherwise I definitely prefer off property dining for dinner and we have found several nearby restaurants nearby that we really like. It is a great vacation for our family, I don't know that it would be my first choice without the kids though.
We went to Atlantis while on a cruise and the hotel looks awesome on the outside. We didn't get a chance to go to the pools but we walked around the casino for a bit and the aquariums. It is a neat hotel but I am not sure If i would pay $$$ to fly there and stay.
I went to Atlantis about three of four years ago. I actually mystery shopped it. It is a good thing I didn't pay one dime to go there because it is the most miserable place ever. It is full of children, the service sucks, you get nickeled and dimed for everthing, and I could go on and on.
Maybe I shouldn't admit this, but DH and I went last year and had a great time! We got a special on the room (a little villa far to one end of the property), and we ate off-site for all but two meals. Maybe that made the difference? Can't say. Anyway, we had plenty of kid-free time on the beach and at the pool. I really didn't notice kids in line for the slides any more than I noticed the other adults, and I honestly don't remember kids sticking out anywhere else.

I'll sit in this corner, we like it so much there we go once a year. Largely b/c of the kids, but DH and I also have a great time when we go out or hang out at the pool sans kids. I can honestly say I haven't experienced the poor service mentioned above and we've been there 4 times.
Some of my family members went for Spring break one year and liked it. It was a 50ish couple and 2 high school seniors. I admit the commercials always have me dreaming of scuba diving and sleeping in glass walled rooms I am not sure I would ever cough up the money to go unless I were taking my children.
I went there for a cruise layover and wasn't very impressed. Bahamas is expensive though. If you're willing to do Mexico or Jamaica, you can get a cheaper luxury (adults only) resort.
The poor feedback is such a bummer. I WANT IT TO BE LIKE IN THE COMMERCIALS, YOU GUYS!
yeah...it's not.
I tried to convince Mrs Z (do you remember her?) not to go there, but she took her Mother I believe one year. They actually really liked it, which was surprising to me.
I just think it is is so, so, so expensive for what it is. That is my biggest problem with it, is I think there are 1 million better places to go.
I did get to go snorkeling with the rays though in their giant aquarium tanks. That was kind of fun. That was probably the highlight of the trip for me. Again, I went for FREE and I would never go back. In fact, they paid me to go there and it was still miserable.
Maybe because I mystery shopped it I have a different perspective in that I timed things and my whole point of being there was to be nit-picky. But pretty much they failed all their own standards.
