The logic of "the machines may not be cleaned well enough" could be applied toward eating anything, anywhere.

UPDATE: I am eating a Crispy Crunch blizzard and my husband has a Reese's Pieces one.

According to Wikipedia, gelato is just soft ice cream with little to no air. There are egg yolks in some flavors - "Egg yolks are used in yellow custard-based gelato flavors, including zabaione and creme caramel, and non-fat milk solids are also added to gelato to stabilize the base."

Lesson: eat chocolate gelato. Done.
