Should I be shopping around for insurance?

I have been with American Family for 8 years. Auto and home is with them. My rates just increase every renewal. I have never made a claim on my home owners insurance yet it just increased 20% over last year. I have made 2 claims in 8 years on my auto insurance and it raises about 5% every 6 months.

I get no "perks" for being claim free or safe driving, etc.

Is this normal? They gave me the line of "all insurance companies are doing it, it isn't just us." I think that is a crappy excuse.

We shop all our insurance once a year. It is a pain but this year we saved $400 doing it, so IMO it's worth it.

Yes, shop your insurance always.

The easiest way to do this is to find an independent agency with access to several markets and request that they shop your renewal every few years or whenever you're dissatisfied with the increase. The market may be hardening up a bit after hurricane Sandy, but it's worth a shot.
