I just nabbed super cheap airfare to Venice for DD's March vacation AND DH's boss has already approved the time off.
Here's hoping we don't have to cancel. Well, that DH doesn't have to cancel, because DD and I would probably go anyway.
Anyone have reco's for daytrips around Venice? Jewels, I know you mentioned the Dolomites, but it looks like they will still be covered in snow. Trieste? Verona? Just hang out in Venice for an entire week?
Day trips to Murano, Burano and Torcello are a must. Visit the glass "botteghe" in Murano and find some traditional exquisite crochet items in Burano. Torcello is where it all began for the people of the laguna, very interesting and charming.
Verona is doable, it will take you roughly an hour by car. I would definitely add one day trip to Verona rather than Trieste.
Just an fyi, because we ended up not doing Venice/Verona this summer, but I did do all the research. There's a faat train that goes from Milan to Venice with just 1 other stop, Verona. The Venice-Verona stretch would be an hour or so (all the way to Milan about 2.5 hours) tickets can be reserved in advance, and ticket prices go up a LOT shortly before you travel. So making a reservation online would be smart.
There's an app for the whole north Italian train system btw, which is useful, since there are a few different companies and they don't all make the same stops.

Sent from my phone, please disregard typos!
Awesome to know, thank you! Do you know the name of the company that runs the fast trains?
Apps are useless to us as neither of us has an iPhone.
Frecciabianca and Eurocity are the fast trains, the in between and slower ones are all regional, which I think is covered by trennord (trenord?) but not 100% sure.
I think you can book both Frecciabianca and Eurocity through trenitalia.it
Congrats, Venice is awesome. It is one of my favorite cities and I did end up just staying there for about a week when I visited because I got so caught up in it, but whatever you do, you should have a great time. One of these days, I will need to go back and explore the area around Venice more widely. I'm a big fan of the Adriatic region generally.
I do recommend trying fragolino, if you can, that's Venetian strawberry wine. I absolutely love it but it is not easy to find anywhere else. Just talking about it is making me miss it ...
