6am Baby Fuss comes into our room wanting us to wake up -- not unusual. While H was taking him back to his room, someone started banging furiously on our front door, "FIRE!! GET OUT NOW!!!"
I heard the banging and yelling and then H screamed for me to get out of bed and get out immediately. I thought it was our house on fire! I ran out of the house barefoot and naked but for my bathrobe screaming, "Where's Baby Fuss???!!!"
Baby Fuss was with H outside, and once I saw that it wasn't our house I was of course relieved. But when I saw the huge flames leaping out of the front of our next-door neighbor's house I realized that ours was in some eventual danger, since the fire department had yet to arrive.
I ran in and in 20 seconds threw into my laundry basket those things you grab when you have 20 seconds to get the most important things you can out of your house, and ran back out. I was so terrified because I could not see our neighbors anywhere. They are an older couple and I was frantic because the fire was so large as to certainly look fatal, not knowing where their bedroom was in the house.
The fire department arrived with 6 or so engines and the fire was out in about 30 minutes. We did find our neighbors a little ways down the street, they got out with nothing but the clothes on their backs, but thankfully everyone is OK. The woman was deeply relieved to see Baby Fuss was OK, since she knows his room is closest to where the fire was in their house (our houses are about 10-12 feet apart).
After about an hour we were allowed back in our smoky-smelling house.
I am truly amazed by the work of our city's veritable Benneton ad of very good-looking firemen and women. Baby Fuss did his part by wearing his fire-truck jim-jams. It was quite an event for him.
Laundry basket had: the clothes that were on the floor next to my bed (for me to put on), coats for Baby Fuss and me, five boxes of old family photos, phones, laptops, car keys. And a bit of dirty laundry lol.
And yes, if you are on FB my link has an "after" pic of the house and more details.
And needless to say we are very grateful to our across the street neighbors who realized we weren't out yet and thought to get us out of our house! Even though we were awake (barely), we honestly had no idea what was going on until she started banging on our door.
The article I linked on FB has a few more photos up. In one you can see our house behind our neighbor's head, so you can see how close together the houses are. That's where Baby Fuss's room is!
