The washer and dryer in our home were here when we moved in 6.5 yrs ago, and I could take a guess that they may be the originals from when the house was built. (So roughly 20 yrs old.)
Both have broken twice, and surprisngly, my husband was able to repair them on his own. He found a great website that offers tutorials for repairs/diagnosis and the parts.
He last repaired the dryer about a year ago. Ever since the repair, it squeaks with each rotation. The squeaking has gradually gotten louder and louder. He says he wants to attempt repairing it again. I think he's crazy. We can easily afford a new washer and dryer. He's just of the mindset that if he can fix it, he will try. Really, though, even if the replacement part(s) are inexpensive as they have been all along, I really think the thing is just ready to be retired.
That said, as the washer is just as old and has minimal settings, I figure we should replace them together.
I'm due with a baby in March and will be using cloth diapers. I don't need or want fancy machines, but would be thankful to have some extra settings built in.
A top loading washer is fine as long as it's HE, and is honestly preferable than a front loader if it's cheaper.
Our units are in the garage (connected to our home) so I really don't care about appearance, front loading, top end models, etc. I just need something reliable with a handful of features. I don't even know what features I'm looking for other than "extra rinse" which our washer currently has.
This is the newer version to the one I have. We got them in 2009 and sill am very much in love with them. They do an EXCELENT job handling everything from my DH dirty clothes (he does manual labor for a living and comes home filthy, to baby poopsplsion, to handling the comforter for our Cali King bed.
We have a Whirlpool Cabrio set, and I'm very happy with them. I went with the top-loading HE because nobody I knew with a front-loader IRL was thrilled with it. 3 people in fact told me NOT to buy their washer (1 LG, 1 Samsung, can't remember the 3rd).
we've had a whirlpool Cabrio set (top loading HE) for about 5 years now, and are really happy with them. its huge and can fit so much stuff ( I even throw our queen sized comforter in there) and just does a nice job cleaning clothes. And, after 5 years they are still running great. i like the top loading because its easy to leave the door up in between loads so that it can dry out and you don't get the "musty" smell that some people talk about with the front loaders.
We got the Frigidaire Affinity W/D set in August. There are 2 different ones and we got the ones with all the fancy settings and steam/sanitize options. We have had no issues so far and they were much more affordable than the LG or Electrolux.

Just purchased a Whirlpool Cabrio set (he) and have had it for about a week. So far I'm really happy with it. Plus I'm really looking forward to seeing those lower water bills and hopefully lower electric bills. I'm glad to see others who have had a similar model for awhile and been happy with it.
check Consumer Reports, for $5 you can get access to their site for a month.
We compared their top recommendations and ended up getting a Samsung top loader. We got the best price at Best Buy and it included free delivery. It is a HE top loader and great with our cloth diapers. I definitely don't recommend a front loader for CDs.

I just bought this one. It was on sale for about $50 less. GE 6.8 cubic Foot dryer from home depot. It does the job and several different cycles and temp settings. All I really need is delicates and permenant press. N
I would not worry about replacing them at the same time, if your washer is doing ok, unless it is someplace where you have to look at it all the time and you want them to match. I paired mine with a 14 year old washer I had been storing storing in my moms basement since I got married 8 years ago. They do the job. I don't like the HE washer and dryers. They are crazy expensive, and I cannot wash the larger loads I like to do. I tend to stuff them full, which has its own energy efficency, but they still get clean.
I had Whirlpool Cabrio top loader in my previous home and loved it. Was planning on getting another Cabrio set for our new house we recently moved into, but got sold on Samsung top loader. I have no complaints about it, but I liked my Cabrio a lot better
