I've been loving the "hi, I make an average salary, live in a HCOL with no savings, a fuck ton of consumer debt and want to know how to buy a house in 2 years."
You can't. The end.
Also probably not that flameworthy, but I'm struggling today (maybe I'm in a good mood? not sure), but when people bitch and moan about their high cost of living, my first thought is that if they think the grass is so much greener elsewhere, they should move to those greener pastures rather than doing the "My area is SOOOOO expensive. I wish I lived in a cheap area like yooooou do" thing. If they insist on staying where they are, it must be attractive to them for some reasons and they shouldn't complain all that much.
My second thought is that the point is usually really to brag rather than complain, so they'll bragplain either way.
I only have a problem with not changing their expectations when they move to a HCOL area from something cheaper. H and I have zero expectation of owning a home a SFH before we have a kid or two. Our game plan now is to buy a condo to build equity, have the kids when they're little there, and then buy a forever home that we like. If we move somewhere cheaper, great! But if not, we have realistic expectations.
-We are going to the casino this weekend and I plan to have a really ($$$) good time. -My FIL is coming Jan. 18th for ten days and I am already planning to get in a fight with him so this will be his last visit. -H is changing jobs and has 2 big time mac daddy interviews on Friday. I am bummed because even though they are moves up the ladder, they will mean a bit of a pay cut initially. His industry is so ass-backwards. But his current company is nucking futs, so it is way past time to leave.
I have finally had an epiphany. I am ready to end 3.5 year relationship with SO.
Gettingfitt, I don't really know you, but I think you're around my age? You seem at peace (?) with your decision, and I'm sure much better things are ahead of you.
I think I am at peace with my decision. I am trying to prepare myself for the shit storm that is about to happen when I tell SO. He is not going to be happy at all. He doesn't think he does anything wrong and I should be quiet and accept him working/tinkering in his truck/helping "freinds" (who take advantage of him) until 5 am 4 to 5 nights a week. This 4-5 nights.
He has vowed to change, but it is all words no action. So like the craziness begin I guess.

Because if someone breaks in when DH is gone, that's how I'm going to defend myself. I don't understand people who think they need guns, but aren't properly trained and/or maintain proficiency at firing it.

This is true, but I admit that as a VHCOL dweller, sometimes I want to throat-punch the people who post things like "is my cleaning lady charging me too much by wanting $80 to clean our 3,000 square foot home?" By the same token, I feel a little smug and satisfied when I see what some folks spend on cars and gas and the like or freak out about whether they want x random person driving their kid somewhere. Taxis and public transport are where it's at.
I'm about 90% sure I am going to quit my job, and I am sitting around, door closed, playing sudoku, GBCNing and doing as little work as possible. If I don't end up quitting, am going to have disturbingly low Jan. billables. Oh well!

This isn't directed specifically at you, but maybe you can answer this for me, because I see this reasoning a lot and I am curious. Do you sleep with a loaded weapon within your immediate reach? And do you do the same when DH is home? If the answer to the latter is no, I am curious what the difference is when he is home? How is he going to do anything against this (presumably) armed intruder if you don't have the loaded weapon within reach when he is there.

Ooh, and on this note, I find it annoying that so many people on this board assume that everyone drives everywhere. I can't think of a specific example off the top of my head, but there's a lot of assuming that everyone commutes by car, for example. I hate that driving single-occupant vehicles is so much the default norm in the vast majority of our country.

Self defense is a dumb reason to own guns.
well you don't need to own one then.
I don't feel that way. Training is very important so you can maintan control and not have it used against you.

They're kinda frumpy, but I don't care because they were $23, they're comfortable, and frumpy is fine by me for work.
I am wearing one today and got a compliment on it from my grandmotherly CW.
I got mine, too, and don't find them frumpy at all! I actually meant to snap a picture when I wore one Monday, but forgot. Love that they're so easy to pump in.
I'm wearing mine now.
Maybe I am fashion-challenged but I dont think it looks frumpy of me. It makes me look skinny.
(This isn't really flameworthy I don't think) but in light of the gun talk, I don't see why owning a gun isn't like driving a car.
We put so much emphasis on knowing how to drive, requiring a written and road test, a license that (in most states that aren't AZ, lol) has to be maintained and updated every few years, but why don't we do that with guns?
Don't think this is flameworthy. I agree. My DH, who used to list gun collecting as a hobby, would agree. My BIL, who made two careers out of being able to shot guns better than most, would agree. In fact, I know a lot of gun owners and they all would agree with this.

Ditto. It sounds dangerous to me to leave a loaded gun in your nightstand (or whatever), and impractical to have it locked away in a safe/unloaded and with the ammo somewhere else (would you really have time to unlock it, load it, and get into a secure position before the intruder gets to you?).
And this is not a snarky question - in this country, what is the ratio of "This gun was used to successfully fend off an intruder/attacker" versus "This gun was used to harm the user or someone else"? I admit that I don't know the answer, but my mindset is that they cause more harm than good.
And I'm sure you are a responsible owner, but I just can't get on board with everyone having the right to own a gun even if it means that the occasional nut bursts into a mall/mosque/first grade classroom and murders innocent people, or that people on the streets are going to gun each other down because they're in rival gangs, or whatever.
I don't feel that way. Training is very important so you can maintan control and not have it used against you.
Someone larger or stronger can easily wrestle a gun out of your hands. It's not all about training.
So we shouldn't bother ever trying to defend ourselves? Because at least with guns there is range. A knife or a bat can just as easily be wrestled away, and my fists aren't really going to be effective against somebody stronger or larger in this situation, either.
(Just playing devil's advocate. I don't know how I feel about guns, really, but your logic above doesn't totally make sense to me.)

I find it amusing, but I can understand why people assume that we drive cars and live in houses and have to drive places and such. That's very normal in most parts of the country.
Not driving is the best. Never needing a designated driver is the best. Getting to walk to places is the best.
I don't feel that way. Training is very important so you can maintan control and not have it used against you.
I do own guns.
I just have enough sense to know that intruders aren't going to stop doing whatever they do so I can get it out of my locked gun safe, you know, where responsible people keep guns.

There is a much higher chance that a gun that you own will be either used against you by an intruder, used by a family member in connection with a suicide or the commission of a crime, result in an accidental death or injury, or be stolen by a criminal than that it will be used successfully to protect you from an intruder.
I think a gun can probably be useful for protection if you live in an area where you or your animals are likely to be attacked by coyotes, bears, etc. Otherwise, I don't see the point.

I hate how unwalkable my area is. I've even said something to DH about how the road where the elementary school is, doesn't have a sidewalk, so everyone is bused to school b/c there's no walkability.
If I could run for local govt I would probably consider it. My county is so behind the times and broke. It needs change.
