it's time to upgrade our bed! last time we bought the cheapest piece of crap at value city furniture, and we need something bigger and better now. we're still sleeping on a full!
We bought the same mattress last March and love it. I was worried about buying a bed without trying it first, but it's worked out really well. It's very firm and does get warm- it's not overbearingly warm in the summer but it gets cozy enough in the winter that I don't need to use our electric blanket.
I love how firm it is (but I could sleep on the floor & be comfortable), but if we spend a few nights on a squishy mattress at IL's house it feels like sleeping on bricks the first night home. I've noticed a huge difference in how much better my back feels since getting this mattress and DH doesn't have knee or hip pain lately. I do think you have to love a firm mattress to be comfortable on this one.

We bought a temperpedic recently, Dh had to have the name brand, but you might also look at Costco, they have memory foam ones for less, that get good reviews.
They delivery people for most mattress here wil take away your old one. They offered. We kept ours though.
I was surprised that mattress companies slap a new name and cover on the same mattress for each store in a region, so it is impossible to compare. DH didn't believe it and asked the salesperson at the store who confirmed. Then, he still argued with her
I've never slept on one, and I don't think you're members (although anyone who is a member can order it online to be shipped to you), but I have heard that the Costco memory foam mattress is really nice and comparable to Tempurpedic at a much lower price point.
One of the last times I was at Costco I was looking at it and a woman walking by raved about how much she loved it.

No suggestions for a mattress; H picked out and ordered ours.
As far as getting rid of the old one, we donated ours to the Salvation Army. I know a ton of people are not fond of them, but they are the only donation site within an hour that takes old mattresses. We had no need to keep it, as our oldest will upgrade to a twin and our guest bedroom already has a mattress.
thanks for the tips everyone! (and keep 'em coming if you have them). we're trying to decide how firm we should go. this memory foam mattress seems to be less firm than the other, which SO likes--he is afraid of being uncomfortable. My thinking is we can always add a pillowtop cover if it's too hard, but you can't make a soft bed more firm. I want the supposed therapeutic effects of a firm memory foam mattress! ha
ETA: costco would probably be a good idea, but we aren't members, don't have close family/friends who are, don't have easy access to an actual store, etc. I might be too lazy for that.
We have the icomfort by Serta and I love, love, love it. I think we paid $1600 total for a queen though. We got the firmest of the three options two years ago.
As far as getting rid of the old one, our garbage truck guy, who has left us a few neon orange nasty-grams in the past for other things DH has tried to throw out, had no problem with our old mattress and box spring. I do live in northern Kentucky though
Maybe check to see if its restricted in your dumpster or not? I wouldn't think there'd be much of a resale market for mattresses, because yuck, and bedbugs. But who knows?
Ugh, I just realized I didn't complete my thought on my above totally-unhelpful post!
The reason I mentioned the mattress we got for DD is I wanted to say we were REALLY satisfied with purchasing it from Amazon. I was very wary of buying a mattress online without testing it, but we read the reviews and product description very carefully and felt we had a good handle on what we were getting. We turned out to be right and are very happy with the purchase. I would just be sure that whatever you buy has good reviews; we chose the mattress we did because the reviews were excellent and the few negative reviews covered issues that would not have been dealbreakers for us.
thanks everyone! I think we'll go the CL route. I'll try listing it for just $25 with pics - I don't want anyone to think there's anything wrong with it. it's less than 3 years old - it's just crappy quality and too small.
Does your building have any sort of message board or bulletin board where you can announce that you're looking to get rid of the old mattress? We have a very active listing system.

brilliant!
I don't know about an electronic message board (that would be great) - but we do have an area right outside of the gym where people can post info about services/items.
haven't been to the gym in a while, which is probably why I didn't think of this.
