1- The 10k is the "healthy active lifestyle" goal that a lot of organizations use now- including gov't agencies etc.
2- I don't THINK so but I would just ignore yesterday, I turned mine on on a Tuesday and actually sort of ignore that whole first week because I was just getting used to it.
3- IMO no, the fitbit is a great tool to use WITH MFP but it's just a fancy pedometer, MFP's database is way better!
4- again, it's just a fancy pedometer. All of the "calories burned" are calculated from walking, so when I wear mine running it's wayyyyy off! (But if you enter the times that you were running on MFP it will adjust your fitbit info)
I REALLY love mine to keep track of my activity level at work mainly. It motivates me to get off my ass and make a lap through the shop to keep that little flower growing! and I thought about lowering the 10k steps/ 10 floors goals but after about a week I was really working to meet them! I started out practically sedentary with bursts of intense exercise and I'm working on being more active throughout the day with the fitbit!

I just got my Fitbit One at the beginning of the week, so I'm still getting used to it.
1. 10K is sort of a standard number that a lot of people and groups use as a healthy goal. You can change the number by going to the Fitbit dashboard. You hover over the section that lists your steps and it will let you edit the number of steps you aim to reach each day. Similarly, you can edit the other goals it has as a default.
2. I just ignored what it said the first day and just spent the first day playing around with it.
3. I haven't added friends on it and likely won't. The people on MFP are really the only people I know with a Fitbit anyways.
4. For workouts, I just keep track of the time and enter those times on MFP. It then sort of adjusts whatever Fitbit had down for those times.
I'm still trying to figure out how to account for the steps Fitbit thinks I'm taking when I drive sometimes. When I go over bumpy roads, it seems to think I'm climbing up stairs. But in any case, it has been fun to keep track of my general level of activity. Who knew chasing two little boys around all day equals an average of 5 miles of walking?
Yay! I am totally hooked on my Fitbit, and credit it with helping me stay on track and truly seeing how even very small changes build up over time. Because of it I am more aware of taking stairs at work, parking far away at the grocery, etc. etc.
I don't use the fitbit site at all, but rely on the syncing with MFP, and solely use the MFP database.
As pps have mentioned, it's really just a fancy pedometer, so when I work out I still use my HRM to track actual calories burned and then on MFP I input the exercise and the time of day I did it, and MFP adjusts the 'fitbit adjustment' you'll notice in the Exercise section.
Since using the fitbit, I no longer log my nightly walks with the dog as exercise- I just let it adjust my 'fitbit adj' for exercise calories. I'm also amazed at how much just being more active around the house adds up- I cooked Thanksgiving dinner and I guess being on your feet cooking and running around the house for 13 hours burns a lot of calories!
Too funny! No idea why it showed up on my first page of threads, but now I'm realizing that your post was probably helpful when i searched here before buying, and loving, mine...so thanks!
I have used the fitbit one for nearly a year now too! I wish I could report that I was down a lot of weight because of it, but mostly it just helps me stay more active throughout the day.
