(Ebates) what happens when you return stuff

I just started using Ebates in Dec. I have an account balance but haven't actually received any money yet

I bought some boots in my normal size, from Nordstrom that are way big. So I ordered them in two more sizes, and I went through Ebates. What happens when I return the shoes I don't want to Nordstroms?

I buy a lot of stuff online in two sizes since I don't know how it will fit me.

Many times (but not always), you don't get the money. You'll get an email saying that they're applying -$x to your account.

I've found that if I've returned an item that was the only thing I purchased, I get a follow up from ebates saying that they took their money back. However, I've also found that if I've ordered 5 things, and returned three, they just leave the account as is.
