Starting back in august or September, I started noticing a patch of dry skin next to my mouth. It got worse, so I went to the dermatologist. She gave me steroid cream, and it helped, until I stopped using it (I was only supposed to use it for a month). I had a recheck with the derm, and at this point it was worse- spread more and to my chin. It is very dry and red. She tested for fungus and that was negative. Did the steroid cream for another month, had a re-check today (its back).
We brainstormed what could be causing it- she thinks it is an allergic reaction. I went off pill control in June, and started pre-natal vitamins in May (Target brand). I'm not particularly loyal to any shampoo, lotion, toothpaste, etc. I don't have any dietary restrictions. We try to eat pretty clean.
We decided that I will try to use only soaps with no dyes and fragrances, and wash everything that touches my face in free and clear detergent. She also suggested stopping my pre-natals, which I am on the fence about. Next step, if it doesn't go away, is either allergy testing by an allergist (a skin prick type test) or a biopsy. She also suggested antibiotics, but is wary because we are TTC.
So my question is, does anyone have any experience dealing with skin issues? Did you find anything that irritated your skin? She also suggested it could be hormonal, since it happened after I came off the pill. Thanks!

Have you ruled out an allergy to your toothpaste? Sounds silly, but since it started out around your mouth, could be the culprit. Try using a natural (bob's brand makes one) and see if that helps!

I did get some Tom's toothpaste today, and some baby shampoo/body soap that is supposed to be super gentle. I really hope it goes away, it looks so ugly

I used to get tiny red bumps that looked like a rash or something, and my doctor said I was allergic to my face wash! So now I only use Cetaphil. And like mild neutrogena face lotion with spf. And I get facials periodically from a gal that uses only all natural stuff. I have noticed a VAST improvement. I too eat clean, for the most part. And I drink a shitton of h20.
I am only now getting a bit of a skin issue on my chin (hormonal area) this week.

Thanks Wine. Funny story- I told my mom I was using Cetaphil, and she goes, "Don't use that! Old people wash their butts with that!"
I have no idea why she thinks that, heehee.
Anyway, I did use cetaphil for a while, but it made my skin a little blotchy. I'm using a super gentle Neurogena now that the dermatologist gave me. I'm thinking maybe its not a product that I use, but maybe a diet thing? Or something to do with coming off BC? Sigh...I wish skin issues were easier to figure out.
My sister used to get a rash similar to what wine was describing. She stopped eating processed foods and the rash went away. (She stopped eating them to try and be healthier but her rash cleared up then as well.)
I would try the allergy testing before antibiotics.

Bahahaha what the what??? Just their butts?? lol
Sorry it didn't help you tho. Do you notice it especially any time of the month?
And if you eat well, (no processed foods, few ingredients, etc) lotsa water, I'm not sure what it could be except for a food allergy.
Do you keep a food journal? Maybe the outbreak is linked to particular foods.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this. I had a spot exactly like you described, it was just down from the corner of my mouth. It lasted for a good 6 months total I would say (like 5 years ago), sometimes looking worse and other times barely noticeable.
My derm and doctor couldn't figure it out either. All I can suggest is Tom's toothpaste, the fluoride free one. Ultimately, I think it just ran its course though...

I gave this a little more thought - you mentioned washing everything that touches your face with free & clear detergents. Did you throw out make-up if you wear any? There could be bacteria in/on the powders, sponges, brushes, etc. I would throw it all out (lipsticks and glosses too) and avoid using cosmetics for awhile. Good luck!
