This is a s/o of all the house buying threads recently. DH and I were die hard "city folks" for the longest time. Alas, living smack in the middle of everything does have its disadvantages and we are now trying to figure out where to search for our forever home.
For example, we live less than 5 miles from where I work and yet it takes me 35 minutes on a good morning to get to work. Most afternoons, it can take me up to 45 minutes to pick up my son from daycare even though that is also 5 miles from my work.
I live 11 miles from work, and it takes between 45min-1hr to commute. Public transportation and car take about the same amount of time. My office is just right in the middle of everything, and there's no good route to get from my house there.
Commute time varies wildly according to traffic. On good days I can make it in 20 minutes. Traffic accidents or weather can make it an hour or more some days.
We both work in Jersey but bought in PA because of the property taxes. It's about 45 minutes each way for both of us. H doesn't mind and will likely always have a long commute, but I'll probably find a job closer to home after we have kids.

I live 15 miles from work and the drive takes me 20-30 minutes. Then another 10 minutes to walk from the staff parking deck to my building (I work for a university). Forty minutes door-to-door is longer than I wanted, but the only traffic I hit is in and out of the campus. For me, it's tolerable because I'm driving, not sitting in traffic, for almost all of the drive.
My office is 4 miles from home, it takes me about 15 minutes door to door. My husband's office is about 6 miles from home but his drive is shorter, just over 10 min.
When I was working, my commute was at least an hour each way. DH was more like 20 minutes. Now that we've moved, he's still about 20-30 minutes away. He had to commute an hour or so once, and he won't do it again. It was a big factor in where we looked at homes.
I live about 25 miles from work. I take the commuter train and subway which takes about an hour and 15 mins. Traffic during the week is terrible and would take about an hour to drive in bumper to bumper traffic. I prefer the train so I can read and drink my coffee.
I live in rural MN and I am roughly a little over 5 miles to work, about a 6 mile commute. This is rather recent, though, and I had been commuting 25 minutes for about 22 miles one way.
Mine is a little over 15 miles, depending on which route you take. I can do it in about 50 minutes in the morning and about 70 minutes in the evening. I drive.
DW's is about 60 mins in the morning and 75mins at night by public transportation. It's 9 miles.

We are spoiled with our commutes now. We both work about 11-12 miles away from our jobs and it takes about 20 minutes to get there.
6 years ago, when we still lived in Chicago, Dh worked 7 miles from our place and it took him 45 minutes on a good day. I worked 50 miles away (reverse commute) and it took me 1.5 hrs without traffic.
Ahhh, the difference between Chicago and relatively small town Wisconsin
I live less than 1.5 miles from work. Driving direct its less than 5 minutes despite being in the middle of the city. I can drive a quick 1-way street all but a couple blocks of it. My kids school is 2 blocks or so from work. With carpool drop off I can leave the house at 7:53am, drop them by 8 & be to work by 8:05.
I looked at taking the bus just out of curiosity & it's 30-40min by bus. I could walk in that time...lol.
I live 6 miles from work and when I drive (which I'm doing for now due to daycare dropoff/pickup, until a spot opens at the center in H's office building) it takes ~20 minutes. That's leaving the house at 7 AM. When I take the bus, it's more like 15 minutes, because the bus has its own lane for much of my commute. I definitely prefer commuting that way. H's commute is about 10 minutes by bus. His office is about 4 miles away.

Mine is 50 min. one way. We live in a big city and I commute to a small town to teach. I tried living in that town for one year and absolutely HATED it. Plus my Grad school and H's work are in the big city, so I suck it up and commute each day.
