Last night very suddenly the base of my thumb (not down at the wrist though) heading towards my index finger felt like a major muscle spasm. That deep aching pain. It made grasping anything with my right hand very difficult.
This morning the pain is still there, mostly when I try to do anything with the right hand. I couldn't turn the door knob this morning or open my drink. Dr. Google isn't helping because it's too difficult to query the spot that is causing the problem.
What say you? Start of arthritis? Carpal tunnel (did you know it can impact your thumb? I didn't)? Dying? Freak of nature?

It might be a tendon issue. I thought I had carpal tunnel and it turned out that my tendon was really inflamed. My doctor put me on an anti inflammatory, and I had to ice my hand and wrist.
Is the pain sort of in the webbing between your thumb and index finger, but at the base of that webbing? Like just above where the bones of thumb and index finger meet?

Go see your doctor. One of the ladies here at work had sort of the same thing, went to be her hand was fine, woke up and she couldn't grip anything with her thumb. One of our hand guys here told her that her nerve was "unhappy" he got her a cortisone shot, put her on some medications and she had to wear a splint. But, her hand started to improve within hours and was fine in a few days.
I agree with seeing your doctor. If the pain were at the bottom of that area I'd say muscle tension (I get it all the time), but that could be done type of pinched/compressed nerve.
